Default Craftsman touch up paint - question and where to get it?

I recently picked up a used DGT6000 tractor and it is a very nic red color. I would like to repaint the hood as it has some flaking and scratches in it. According to the Serial no. it was manufactured in 2004. Can anyone tell me how to get the paint ID number or where to get exact touch up color in a can?

I have another craftsman tractor that has the paint no. under the hood, but this one does not. I don't trust the spray cans, because I ordered the paint for this tractor by its code in a spray can and it did not match at all. I had to send the can back for a refund.

If I could get the code no. I could have some mixed up by local paint store, however if you guys have experience with buying touch up paint in a spray can and had having ;no trouble with matiching or quality, I would appreciate some advice.

For those of you who used a spray can from sears or other, did the paint fade?

Thanks,
Mike

IMO they are tractors, they get used hard, they get scratched, live with it and appreciate it for what it is.

Embrace the wear marks

LOL, well remeber I bought it used and I am trying to repair everything that needs fixed, plus touch it up with paint so I can get that semi-new feeling, just once before I abuse the SOB.

found the touch up paint, went online chat with searspartsdirect.com and got the part no. for my tractor. The part no. refers to several paint codes which is confusing, they said all paint codes were the same paint: 505, 506, 394, and 423 are all red under the part no. 136247. does that make sense.

It wont matter anyways, you could get the exact match and it still wont match lol

If the paint codes don't exactly match, which they may not, place another order and buy enough paint to paint all of the red parts on the tractor. The paint comes in a can that shows who made it and you may be able to buy it direct from the manuf of the paint.

I bought the green touch up paint from sears for my 1999 Model, have not tried it, but if it does not match, I will buy more to make it match, ie paint the entire hood and fenders if needed.

If it does not move , paint it, if it moves, grease or oil it!

The searsdirectparts chat line gave me the wrong paint code. They said it was Red 505 or 506 , 423 & 394 would all be the same color. I don't know how because the paint code number suggests a different color, but they assured me it was correct for my model. I order 505 and it did not match at all. It was a dull red and I have a bright nice cherry red. I called AYP tech support , and gave him the same model no. , he told me it was code 615, part no. 177392. I asked him how he came up with another code than sears, he said that was the number under the hood. I don't know where he was looking, he would not have a old tractor sitting in the technical support department. I cant remember his answer, but assured me that the 615 was the bright red and correct.

I am trying to get sears to give my money back or exchange the 505 since they gave me the wrong info before I bought it.

I called searpartsdirect today and asked to talk to a customer care department and asked to talk to a manager. After them trying to give me the run around, I finally got them to send me a free can of Red 615 paint & free shipping. Its normally $30.91 plus shipping, $24 plus SH from Outdoor Distributors. Sears said if it does not match this time then I can send it back until they get the right color. Managment checked their system and it called for Red 615, but when I used Online chat department , they gave me the wrong color twice.

I am pretty sure its the right one and will have a close match and if super close, you can feather it in so you cant tell, if that don't work I will paint all the red parts on it. One can should do it.

Thats better than painting the whole tractor with the wrong paint which was an ugly red. The Red 615 is a bright cherry red which is their best color.

Just go to the hardware store, and buy about 15 cans of $1.25 red paint and some sand paper. You will spend about 1/3 of what you will fork over to searsparts for touch up, that like said, wont match up with the faded red.

you have a good point, but if you saw the red color on this DGT6000 , you would say its the best color of red you ever saw. Cars don't even have this nice of a color. Plus i do think the higher cost sears paint is more durable against fading and resistant to gasoline spills. At least on got this can of paint free.

Not arguing. Free is good. I will follow this and hope to see your results. PS my Red is getting his 3 year re-do New coat of paint, new gaskets and deck overhaul. Here is red after 3 years in the Texas sun, and a couple recent re do shots.
I am waiting on a new "oil slinger" before re assembling the engine.

I aquired "RED" in 2009 for $100.00, Here is the rebuild vid then. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0WeKMmfwOo I didn't have a winter project this year, so I decided on a refresh on RED. Based on what I found with the OIL SLINGER, I guess I made a good desision.

Lost a parking lot blower B&S engine due to cheap plastic parts! Wasn't happy with B&S when I cracked open the case and found plastic chunks in the sump!

Glad you caught it before the part failed!

Red is looking all spruced up for spring! Need some black & gold ghost flames coming around the front grill and across the hood!
