Default 455 questions

Hi everyone,
My new to me 455 was delivered and I have several questions on operation etc.
1. The machine has a JD 40 FEL and a 54inch box scraper mounted to the 3 pt. hitch. When the bucket is raised and I try to dump the bucket in the raised position, the box blade also lowers to the ground. This makes it impossible to move back and forth while dumping to spread any material from the bucket. Is there a way to stop the 3 pt. from lowering while trying to dump the bucket?? Both the hitch and bucket dump operate from the same lever, so it appears.
2. The steering wanders a bit while moving on hard surfaces. Is there an adjustment possible in the steering gear to stop the wandering??
3. There's a small leak on the power steering piston. Is it a "major" job to 1st, replace the piston seals or 2nd, replace the piston? Naturally, I would want to use the most cost effective to complete the repair.

And last, I need to buy a 54 inch mower (used if at all possible) to install on the tractor. The serial number on the 455 is M00455020294 which I believe is a '93 model. I've looked at the replacement decks and at $1399 plus shipping that's difficult. As A last resort, then a 60 inch mower can be an option. Problem I have is knowing what serial numbers of mowers in 54 or 60 inch will correctly mate up with the '93 model.
Thanks for any advice and direction y'all can send me.

You need to install the rock shaft cylinder lockout valve to shut off the 3pt hitch while using the loader, the loader and 3pt can't be used efficiently together because the tractor only has 3 spools of hydraulics, the cylinder i believe is rebuildable, used decks should be available.. watch your local craigslist

Thanks dan33klein,
Any good sources for a rock shaft cylinder lockout valve?
Your reply was very helpful.

They can be found at your local dealer/online dealer,

There are some used/new on ebay.

Im guessing whoever sold it to you removed it and installed the original fitting to sell it on ebay and make a quick 70$
Or use it on another machine.

ALSO BE SURE YOU DONT ALREADY HAVE THE VALVE INSTALLED. ITS LOCATED ON THE BACK OF THE SCV VALVE WITH THE 4 COUPLERS FOR THE LOADER HYDRAULIC LINES, IF THE VALVE IS ON THERE, CLOSE THE VALVE AND YOUR GOOD TO GO!

Good luck!

The steering cylinder can be repaired. But, it's not an 'at home' job unless you have a lathe and welder. Contact Alan Nadeau here. He did mine and did a great job. If he doesn't see this, or you can't locate his info, pm me and I'll send his email.

Dan33Klein,
I notice you have a 455. Does your tractor have the lockout valve? I'm told by some that this was an optional equipment item.
Thanks

Yes it is optional equipment. If I where to do it over again I would get a 1/4 turn valve from Ron at aux hydraulics. Much easier than the 6 turn Deere version

I dont have a lockout valve, and i can run my loader very efficiently, but if i had something on the 3pt too. i would buy one from ron.
Good luck

You run the loader without a lockout? Wouldn't you get faster hydraulic response if the rear rockshaft cyclinder was not active at the same time an auxiliary cylinder was in use? You are filling and emptying the rockshaft cylinder with hydraulic flow that would be instead ONLY filling your bucket cylinder if rear was locked out. Your bucket would lift faster and be more responsive. just a though Dan, but maybe you prefer the speed of your current loader.

Cycle times are much better with the valve. It's annoying with the delay

Technically you can run the loader without the lockout. Just screw the rockshaft adjuster all the way in with the box blade at its highest point.
I do this sometimes when in a hurry on my 455 because I have the 6 turn lockout valve.

Cobra. When I built my loader I didn't want to spend 75$ onthe valve. I told myself I would just wait and see if its really that needed. I've moved 3 semi loads of pea gravel for a friend for his big playground for the daughter. And various jobs moving dirt. It is only a 2 second delay and then the bucket moves fast. Maybe the delay is worse with the actual 40 loader. But my homemade one. It's perfectly fine. Only way ill buy the valve is if it sucks with the blade. But my loader cylinder is 4 time the size of of the blade one. So it can't be worse

Thats what I figured , I remember you built a similar buford style bucket. I have future plans to build one as well.
