As I understand it, these are the 3 primary things that many folks do to improve the Model 49 snowthrower:

1) Add the rubber flaps as described by Mxzrxp in This Thread;

2) Change the size of the auger drive sprocket to increase auger rotation speed; and

3) Swap the short chute for the tall one (if you don't already have it).

Another common mod, if your tractor has a spare pair of hydro outlets, is to convert the manual chute rotation to hydraulic, by bolting a hydro motor right to the wire drum. Also, I've seen where folks have increased chute rotation by adding wraps of wire to the chute base.

I use an electric actuator for spout control, car window motor for rotation control (third pic is the bracket for the motor). Drift cutters on both sides, make it easier to see where the ends of the blower are! And, don't forget the cab! ~~ grnspot

Hi All
Just wanted to share my Pic of our 1986 318 taking on Nemo in Trumbull, CT. 34" of snow fell from Friday 2/8 to Saturday 2/9, Drifts of 5' and grater. I did the 2 Mods for our Model 49 Snowthrower/ Snow Thrower from MTF and played with the Engine RPM, adjusted the Govenor to just above 3'600 rpm. I changed my Driven Sprocket to a 34 Tooth sprocket

and added the Rubber Wipers to the 2 Paddles on the Auger.
Awesome.
