Default John Deere 400 PTO Problem

Getting the 400 ready for the white stuff since its getting close to that time, One thing I never did get on this machine when I picked it up a few months back is the pto, Previous owners wife said the guy couldn't figure it out either, How does it lock on? Right now I have to hold it on otherwise it shuts off. Any diagrams? The manual says nothing about it locking.

There are a set of bushings that mount on each side of the rear where the hitch plate bolts on. The hitch plate HAS to be removed.

If you are familiar with JDparts.com.........go to the following page and it will show you a picture of the PTO hitch........pretty self explanatory from there.

Which PTO are you referring to?

Robert, it doesn't sound to me he is talking about the rear PTO that you describe.

ShelbyGT, the lever "locks" forward when engaged like it is on some sort of "cam" or eccentric gear. You may need to adjust (and this is a guess) the idler arm or possibly your cable is stretched. If you open the hood you will see there is a cable attached to the PTO arm I would follow it and see if there is too much slack. Sometimes my mine gets hung up on the battery and doesn't engage, so it's not exactly a really precise system but it is simple.

I would go to the JDParts.com web page like Robert mentioned and it will diagram all the parts/pieces. There is a cable, a pulley (I believe) and some other odds and ends.

If it isn't the cable then it may be the whole PTO Idler arm and front PTO assembly has died on you. I see used ones on Ebay fairly frequently. Prices vary wildly depending if its the whole set up or part of it. I am guessing the cable and its assembly is out of sorts.

Nope, its a lever on the right side of the tractor the engages or disengages an idler arm on the PTO belts to allow the PTO to engage or disengage. Very simple set up all things considered.

Sorry.........I misread it the first time......I thought he was referring to the rear since the front PTO is pretty much mounted and isnt removed.

Shelby, I have a cable and attachments if you need them, just give me a shout.

Catalog: 1475 | Grid: C3 | Section: | Page: 52 gives you all of the parts and where they go......pretty straight forward.
