Default JD 830a

I own a JD 830a, made in Geermany circa 1975. I am having trouble with it being "stuck" in 1st gear. I thought it may be the clutch, but the PTO works just as it should with the clutch. But I can not get the transmission to engage with the clutch, I have to force it into gear then it stays in gear until I force it out. It will only go into first gear, if I force it into 2,3, or 4 it is still in 1st. Advice??

Also is there a model that is the same as this one made in the USA? I need to find a Repair Manual but the only Manual that I can find for this model is a 50's model tractor.

Here's the tech manual on CD-ROM that can be ordered from JD and other places.
Technical Manual CD-ROM TM4279CD 830 Utility Tractor

I've never seen one of those utility tractors hard to get in gear if the traction clutch operates properly. I have seen the metal tab that gearshift sits in break off the shift rail. One would need to remove the gear shift plate to have a look to determine if tab is broken. To perform this task the metal cover over transmission(parts key #8 2nd photo) would need to be removed.

It is possible there is something wrong with the engine clutch(# 1).



The PTO clutch(# 21) is separate from the engine clutch. This is known as a 2 stage clutch.

The engine clutch disk may possibly be stuck to the flywheel. If so, it will be hard to shift into gear; and hard the shift out of gear.

Another possibility may be a damaged engine clutch. Remove plug(# 12) and have a look inside to see what's going on.

Thanks. I will see if this information helps. It sound like there is definitely a problem with the Engine Clutch from what you say.

I checked this, nothing is broken. The parts are of a different orientation than the diagram shown, but similar.

When I posted the parts schematics I noticed the shift rails were pointing in the opposite direction than the dash cowling.

If you put the gearshift lever for 1-2-3-4 in neutral and the range selector in H or L position will the tractor move or is it in neutral??? The reason I ask is because you stated that it seemed you could only get the tractor in "1".

I can only get it in L-1, all other gear selection positions are the same. IE H-3 is still L-1.. I am now sure that the engine clutch is stuck to the flywheel, I took those two plugs off and it is clearly stuck. Suggestions on getting it "unstuck" without taking the tractor completely apart??

I am confused. If the clutch is stuck, the tractor won't stop when you push in the clutch. Is that happening? Also, even if clutch is stuck, the tractor should move in whatever gear you manage to get it in. In other words, it won't always be in L-1. If you get the transmission in reverse, will it go in reverse? If transmission is in neutral, will it sit still or does it still drive? If the clutch is stuck, then when you get it in gear, hold down on the clutch pedal while sharply applying the brakes. Try hitting one brake at a time and sometimes the shock load will break the clutch loose.

Don't feel lonesome because I'm also confused. FultonFarm never stated if tractor was or wasn't stuck in gear.

If clutch is stuck,spray brake cleaner on clutch/PP as best you can and then follow jd110's instructions of stomping on each individual brake pedal while tractor is moving with clutch pedal depressed.

Does the 830 have the grease fitting in front of the clutch like the 820 did, being it is basically close to the same tractor

Yes, that is exactly what is happening, I have never had this happen, so I am confused too.. It will not go into reverse.. Sits still in neutral.. I will try the brakes like you suggest.

I will try this. The tractor is not stuck in gear, I have to force it into gear. When I do force it I can only get it into L-1, even if I get it into another gear, it still only "acts" like it is in L-1. It will not go into reverse at all!. I will spray it with brake cleaner, force it into gear, and try to stomp the brakes like jd110 and you suggest. I will let you know if that helps... Thanks..
