Default 318 stalls while mowing - again and other electrial problems

318 w/ P218G Gremlins’
Help! I have a 318 w/ P218G Gremlins that have moved in and taken over. Some background, I have been fighting a backfiring problem all summer to no avail. Now it has infected the starter as well.
Symptoms:
The engine used to fire right up and run fine as along as I did not engaged the front PTO. If I engaged the front PTO to mow, it was good for about 10 to 15 minutes until everything warmed up, then the missing/backfiring would start as soon as the front tires were just slightly below level. Mow on the level or uphill, NO Problem. Mow down hill, missing, backfiring etc to finally stall. Disengage the PTO and it would start right up again.

Now, the starter will just bump the fly wheel but not turnover??? WTH!!

Repairs that I have made since buying the tractor 3 or 4 years ago:
New Electric clutch (front PTO) – from JD
New Voltage regulator/rectifier – from Onan
New condenser – from Onan
New Coil - from Onan
New plug wires, (one plug wire was bad) – NAPA
Carburetor rebuild by Independent JD certified mechanic,
I replaced the fuel lines and have emptied the fuel tanks several times and replaced the tank pick ups
Mechanic did a leak down test and everything is/was fine
New stator – from Onan
New ignition module, ignition trigger, and stator – Onan, I did not replace the trigger (the trigger is install with the “this side to flywheel” ) until after the carb rebuild and was advised to do so, that is when the starter problems occurred.
The tractor came with the starter improvement kit.
All of the electrical components have been tested time and again and are with in spec.

I am at my wit’s end with this.

Any and all suggestions are welcome.

try by/passing the low oil pressure switch,
and be sure that the crank case is full.
also do a oil pressure test.
the port is above the filter 1/8 pipe fitting.
a new p220 that i installed recently had 18# at idle.
it sounds like this will be a problem child.
the starter should still turn it over.
good luck. boomer ( the used onan engine parts guy )

Boomer,
What is the correct oil pressure and how do you jumper something that only has one wire? Thank you for the idea, as I never would have considered it. I always check the oil before every use and add as necessary.

just use a jumper from + batt. to + ign. coil.
my manual says 8 psi at 1500 when at operating temp.

318 infected with P218G Gremlins’
Update: Pulled the engine again, removed the starter and thoroughly cleaned the starter, solenoid, ignition switch, starter improvement kit, etc. Tested the starter/solenoid as per the Onan manual and all meet Onan specs. The battery has 12.9 volts. I just put the engine back in the tractor to test fire it and still the starter will not engage the flywheel and turn the engine over.. I am going to pull the engine, remove all the tin,c-clamp it to my workbench, remove the plugs so that there is no compression for the starter to work against, to see what is happening with the starter.

Any ideas as to how to jury rig a key start for this test.

Any and all comments are very much welcome.

Appears to be a toughie... dumb questions but is the starter adjusted so the gear "runs into" the flywheel teeth rather than engages.

I assume the engine will roll over (ie.e not stuck)? I'd agree pull the plugs to relieve compression and try to get starter to turn it over.

Actually it sounds like the starter is going bad to me. Like the brushes inside are not making the full contact on the rotor. Just a guess here but you might break apart the starter to see just how much gunk is in there...........KJD

bad battery can do that!

12.9 volts is fine, but can it stand the load of the PTO (assuming the front pto is electric)

have the battery load tested I think NAPA does it for free or just replace it...

345 had same symptoms...
