Default John Deere LT166 Gas Tank: Clean or Replace?

I acquired a JD LT166 for $25 few days ago. Guy told me the gas tank has black stuff in it from old gas. I dropped the tank. Found the steel line is rotting and has a hole in it near top. Also the inside of it is smelly and gummy lookin. The JD dealer wants $116 for a new tank and I found couple used on ebay for under $75 after shipping costs. Not sure what to at this point on cleaning the old tank or get another instead wasting time on the old one. I have no part washer to clean it.

Also need the lower hood assembly which is $337 from the JD also but found it cheaper new on ebay at $265.

Here's pics of the gas tank.

There is no way I woud use the one in the picture. Sorry some of the stuff is so expensive, just the way JD stuff is. I also have to buy the lower portion of my hood and it is in the $230 range, but what are you going to do.
Think of it this way, you only paid $25 for it, what a deal. It would be nice if the tank was plastic rather than steel.

The tank is plastic the line going in the gas tank is steel. But when I talked to the JD parts guy both version of the line going in the tank subs to the same part number. Meaning the steel line version of the tank is not a option anymore its all plastic plastic line inside tank now. Probably gamble on a used one then later buy new if it fails.

A different story now, the picture of the tank just makes it look like steel to me and you stated it had a hole in it and I guess I just assumed it to be steel, so I would really try to salvage this one and then try to rig something up for the gas line, plastic or rubber line.

I wonder if some SeaFoam would cut that stuff? I've seen them cleaned with a pressure washer before too. Heat would help.

I wonder if bleach would work? What about dumping cans of the b12 carb cleaner(the can you pour in with the gas not the spray) in there n shake it up and let it sit for awhile.

looks like that guy added a BOTTLE of Sta-bil to the tank and that's what setteled in the red gooey mess.. I would clean it with lacquer thinner and then rinse it with gas really good. Lacquer thinner is only a mix of xylene/ Toulene ( octane booster ) with a couple other solvents. I also would try brake cleaner.

I cleaned tank out except one corner that missed. I noticed bunch of brown dots. When scrapped couple of them a layer of the plastic came off with it. The brown dots are rotting the tank out. So I still need another tank.

just fiberglass the effected areas after cleaning it out.. You'll spend $20 instead of $100 and it will likely last the life of the tractor.

Plastic does not 'rot'. It may deteriorate (as in become thinner or more brittle), but it will not rot. The process of 'rotting' refers to organic matter decomposition, and plastic is not organic. A coating of fiberglass is a good idea.

Its actually coming through the plastic from the inside of the tank. Plus i doubt I can the fuel line that does in side anyways since they changed the design and location of where the pickup line is on the tank. I get another tank used of ebay for $65 after adding shipping to the cost.
