Default John Deere Opinion Question

Opinion Question
Today I was going over to a friendís house and I see a guy down the road from me has a John Deere 212 for sale for $575.00. Is that a fair price or do you think I have some haggling room? What would be a fair price? I donít have any pictures yet. However, it does look a little beat up.
The tractor has a Kohler motor, I am not sure of the size. Can someone please tell me possible what year this tractor is?

Thanks for any in put

Here's the specs on the tractor from Tractordata.com

http://www.tractordata.com/lawn-trac...deere-212.html

Hard to tell what year it is without the serial number, since it was made between 1975 and 1987...

There is a listing for one with a 46"deck and 47" blade that looks in real good shape at a dealer for a grand in Michigan.

Hello
Thanks for the web link littletractorguy. I stop by the tractor again today and took some picís for you guys. Please tell me what you think.
Thanks Buckatabon

What do you guys think? Is it worth $575.00 I am not quite sure but I think the tractor is a 1980. The tractor has a broken steering wheel and the rear tires have cracks from dry rot

Would be about $450 here as it is manual lift, but pricing in you area may be more. Looks to be in good shape though considering age.

I'd agree, that's about what they go for up this way!

Although these tractors have a lot of fans on this forum, I am not big on the 200 series just because I prefer Hydrostatic Tranny's.
If you keep your eyes open you can get into something JD with Hydro Tranny in good shape for that price.
But...they are TOUGH AS NAILS.
They ARE good tractors! If you like gear driven tractors, it would be right up your alley!

Possibly a late '79, if TractorData's serial number list is on the money...

You'd have to take a test drive, really... $575 might be a bit high, I agree, but it DOES look like its in good shape...

If you can test drive it, try to make sure you test:

- Deck lift - easy? hard? Hard to tell with a manual lift, I'm not sure if the 212s had a lift assist spring for the mower
- Variator - do you get full travel on it with tension? Or is it loose/floppy at any point (that's the handle on the OTHER side from the deck lift, it enables you to vary the speed of the tractor from fast -> forward position to slow -> back position). If it doesn't feel good to you, there may be a problem.
- Transaxle - Does it shift into all gears? Remember, these guys don't "shift on the fly" like a car, you stop, shift into the gear you want, then start moving again (hence the need for the variator, 'cause shifting into 5th at full throttle and variator set to fast would be a bit of a LURCH).

- How does the mower sound when you engage the PTO? No serious wobbling or squeaking or squealing?

Obviously, oil checking, etc...

It's a 1979 4 speed but first gear is a granny low gear good for a top speed with the variator at it's fastest setting of about 0.9 mph. So for most uses it's 3 speed, but with the variator set to it's fastest setting in 4th gear it's good for about 7mph, quite a rapid pace for a garden tractor.

Nice to see that deck isn't all banged up. The K301 Kohler is built better than most car engines today....

The black smut on the side of the hood/side tells me she's been running super rich or oil smoking for a while, and it didn't wash off when he put it outside. Kohler might be tired. Black smoke when running is the fuel mix (carb out of wack), blue or white-ish blue is worn rings.

Not a deal breaker by any means, just watch for it and adjust the price as necessary. If you are going to use the tractor to play around, then a little smoke isn't a big thing. If you are going to mow a lot, then it would be.

My thoughts are, the right side panel isn't all burnt, so at least the shield is still on the exhaust. Big things on those are the variator working and the transmission not staying in gear, though both normally work. I guess, check for any big transmission leaks at the ends of the axles and excessive steering slop. The price is highish, but the tractor looks well taken care of. The deck is a big plus as it looks to be solid. The kohler singles are great engines, but nothing lasts forever. Make sure it doesn't knock. If it is smooth & quiet it will probably last another 20 years.
The 200 series are as tough as the 300 series, but the hydraulics on the 300 series make them worth more. If you want it for yourself, you could do a lot worse and it will outlast any modern cheaply made lawn tractor you can buy. I'd say jump on it. If you are wanting to resell for a profit I'd keep looking for a lower price or a 300 series. This one is priced fairly already.

Just as a comparison, I just paid $500.00 for a 210 here in Central Texas. The tractor has been stripped down, sandblasted and repainted. Once I started driving it I found I needed a new coil, points were shot and several oil leaks opened up on the front of the engine. Mine doesn't have a deck or any of the deck hardware or lowering/raising gear. That tractor looks like a bargain compaired to what it is going to cost me to get my new prize into mowing condition.
