Hmmm, would you recommend I replace the transmission oil in my LT150 with synthetic to avoid having to rebuild it down the road? I just got it and have no issues right now, but it would seem that doing a simple change to synthetic would be better (and cheaper) than doing a rebuild.

BTW - I didn't realize that the K46 could be rebuilt fairly easily. According to the owner's manual, there's nothing to maintain with the transmission as it is a "sealed component".

it is "sealed" because Deere does not sell user serviceable parts for it, when one goes they sell a new transmission. but TT sells the parts and even makes a K46 with a filter. last time i counted, it was well over 2 DOZEN various K46 models out there for various design needs.

According to JD you have a K46C, and yes you should change the oil in it for the synthetic one.

According to TT it extend the transaxle life.

Will do. I'm still waiting on my Gator blades to arrive, so the deck is still off... should make removing the transaxle go quicker.

BTW, I found your article on doing the oil change.

http://www.mytractorforum.com/showthread.php?t=161413

Anything you'd change since you posted it or maybe some additional advice?

I do have a question about the fill line though. I can't quite tell from the diagram where the fill line is.

Maybe one thing to add, put a little bit of anti seize grease on the pulley splines.

The transaxle filler hole don't have a mark (line), you have to measure it (use the magnet) from the top, 20mm it's "~ and 25mm is 1".

As you`re taking apart your transaxle, take pix and notes during the process. It`s easier than you think to forget just in just what order something came apart during reassembly.

I guess I'm still missing something. Which level do I fill it to... 20mm or 25mm?

Thanks for the advice. I get CRS many times while disassembling things. I'm actually considering filming the entire process just so that I can go back and watch it when I start forgetting where parts go.

You fill it at 20mm, after the bleeding procedure the oil should be at 25mm "line/mark"
It do not matter if the oil level is not perfectly at the exact level, just do your best to respect it.

on pictures or video, one small piece as tendency to drop on the floor, it is demonstrated on the previous video.

About a year ago I removed my K46 from my X300, opened it up, cleaned the insides and the magnets, filled it with Castrol 5W50 and re-assembled and reinstalled. It was a pretty easy job and I think its good preventative maintenace. I do a lot with my X300 and the trans still preforms like it did the first day. I did this oil change at 200 hours and I will continue to do it every 150 to 200 hours. Putting the 5W50 is a big improvement over the 30 or 40 weight thats in it from the factory.

Thanks for all your advice. I might have a free day this weekend to change the oil in the K46. Hopefully I'll have good news on Monday about how it went.

Well, I just got back in from the garage... and unfortunately things didn't quite go smoothly.

The removal of the transaxle wasn't too bad. The problem came when removing the fill cap. I couldn't figure out how to remove it and ended up tearing it, so I have to order a replacement now. I didn't realize that there was a metal ring on the cap.

The other thing I found out was that the previous owner likely already changed the oil and replaced it with synthetic... likely Royal Purple. The oil was very clean looking and had a purplish tint to it. Unfortunately, I didn't know this until I started to drain it. Oh well, at least it'll have fresh Castrol in it going forward.

Hopefully the new fill cap comes quickly... I need to get the mower back together and now the grass.

Maybe Royal Purple ATF... I'm not aware of any other brands that color their ATF purple.
