Default Comet engine replacement

I've tried to replace the engine on my Comet with a used Tecumseh TVXL195 but after spending hours on trying to get the governor set with no luck Ive decided to scrap it and replace it with a new Briggs 10hp. I've read that to fit an engine of this size that one of the 'fenders' will need to be trimmed. How much will it need to be trimmed? Does any one have a pic of one that's been trimmed? I've also read that the left rear post will need to be removed to allow clearance for the muffler. Are there any other mods that will need to be made to fit a Briggs 10-12hp? I'd rather stay with a 8hp but I want elec start and I haven't been able to find any Briggs 8hp that are elec start so I'm looking in the 10-12hp range. Thanks for any help.

I do not know why this would be necessary using the regular Snapper exhaust/muffler, never heard of it and I have replaced plenty. Besides, the muffler will be on the right side.

The fender needs to be trimmed IF the engine has a bolt in the middle of the back of the crankcase to provide clearance for it. I usually just trimmed the entire fender off even with the top of the frame to match the newer model Snappers. A model 28---- engine will need it, a model 25---- engine will not. Both were used as 10 hp and you did not post the model number.

The Briggs models I'm looking at are 219977-0129, 217807-0148, or 219907-3029. Would the regular Snapper exhaust/muffler that you are referring to bolt up to any of those models or is the exhaust port dia on those models too large for the standard muffler? I know the muffler they recommend with those engines are in the $50 range whereas most of the standard Snapper mufflers are $15 or so.

Would cutting the fender be required with either of the models above?

I have no idea about those engines.
