Default Just another rebuild thread!! Bolens GK

So I will give you the background on this bolens GK. I bought it last summer and it has been sitting in my shed since then untill yesterday. My cousin and I pushed it into my shop and started working on it (carb rebuild, clean the fuel pump, a new tank. We couldent get it running untill today i fixed the spark module (twisted the wires up and shoved them in and put a screw in to hold them). Adjusted the carb to 1 1/2 turns out squirted gas in the cylynders and it fired up and off I went. When i post the videos you will see that it doesent steer well because the steering valve needs a heli coil kit (the valve twists) It has no muffler no attachments so the front end is quite light. The hood is in my shop. This is going to be a slow rebuild with lots of questions that i will need answers for so PLEASE feel free to help. I will post pictures later tonight when i get them uploaded. I also have a few videos but they may come a little later.

This is going to be a very interesting restoration to watch, and I bet it's going to be a really nice restoration just like your 1054.

Once you sandblast with an adequate sized compressor you wont want to use anything else

I use black beauty sandblasting sand and even with a decent sized compressor you have to wait occasionally. Now that it runs i am going to start the SLOW rebuild as i have other projects that I do at the same time. My first question is how do you get fiberglass ready for paint? My sandblaster? And what do i use to fill in the chips and cracks because the hood looks pretty rough?

Same kind of blasting gun I use, if you have deep rust you'll be further ahead hitting it with a twisted wire brush wheel before using the sandblaster.

I have seen fiberglass repaired by sanding off the top coat until you get into the raw fiberglass, then soaking the old, dried -out fiberglass with fresh resin to resolidify the old stuff. I think that is what professional restorers do to old Corvette bodies, then they do the follow up repairs on a good substrate.

I would think that media blasting would cut into the old fiberglass too quickly.

I am thinking i will sand with orbital sander then bondo the chips. I dont want to try what LP bolens said because i am terrible with fiberglassing (my canoe looked like the sides were bulging out ond still leaked). need some bondo now. The hood is currently sitting in my basement so i will start cleaning and striping it tonight.
