Help Cub 128 Questions - PTO & 3 Point

Just bought a 128 (Hydro Lift) and was wondering if any one out there has any DIY plans for building a Cat 0 3 point hitch. I know of several websites offering them but I don't have 500 bucks laying around to spend on one. Also, they say the kits are for non rear PTOs. Has any one seen a true 3 point hitch along with a rear PTO?

Thanks

Not On a Cub Cadet 128 Not a true Cat 0. and I would Not worry about Putting a Rear PTO On Your 128 Because It was only a 515RPM PTO and Really Could Only use a Few specific IH Made attachments That didn't need a IH 3point either. The Tiller for example Use a Belt of the Front PTO to a Gear Box That You Bolted On the Rear Trans Case and Then Used another Belt To the Tiller. The Rear 515RPM PTO's for IH Cub Cadets Until the 982 Came Out was really Pretty worthless The 982 Had the First PTO that You could actually use to Power tillers and some Aftermarket equipment

The first Cub Cadet model that had a rear PTO & Cat 0 3 Pt lift, was the 982. And the 982 was a Hydro Drive. From the factory, IH did NOT make anything per your inquiry on a Gear Drive tractor.

If you do end up buying the hitch from Xtreme motor, the quality of both material and manufacture and absolutely top notch.

IH 3point Hitch
Cub Cadet or Original IH 3point

Narrow Frame IH 3point with Brinly adapter(Sleeve Hitch)

Wide Frame IH 3point

Aftermarket True Cat 0 3point Hitch Kit for Wide Or Narrow Frame Cub Cadets

Aftermarket True Cat 0 3point Hitch Kit Mounted

As stated The first Cub Cadet to have a real Cat 0 3point Hitch was the 982
The 82 Series Standard Garden tractors such as the 682 & 782 Switched from a IH 3point type to a True Cat 0 3point In 1983 Once the trans Case was switch from Cast Iron to Cast aluminum and that 3point Looked similar to this

It's a Good thing You Have Hydraulic Lift on Your 128 It will Make using the aftermarket 3point a Lot easier. Basically if You had the Rear 515RPM PTO the aftermarket 3point Hitch Kits would Not Mount On your 128 Is what that statement your read is saying and If You mount the Aftermarket True Cat 0 3point You really only going to Be able to use Non PTO Powered Cat 0 Implements or sleeve Hitch Implements with a 3point to Sleeve Hitch (A) Frame adapter and Separate engine Powered Cat 0 Implements with You 128 But If You Plan on ever Running a IH tiller on your 128 You will actually need to get the Wide Frame IH 3point Instead of a aftermarket True Cat 0 3point

Thanks guys!

Very informative. Would still be cool to have a PTO on the 128 though. I know that with the addition of PTO on the 128 you would still be limited on attachments. (unless custom built). Is there a reason those aftermarket manufactures of the cat 0 3 point don't offer one for a factory PTO?

Probably Because the Rear PTO was Not Very Common On these Tractors If You actually find a Rear PTO they are few and Far Between You could Probably ask xtreme if they could Make One that would accommodate the rear PTO But I bet You would Have to Provide the tractor with PTO Installed so They Could Use Your Tractor to Make the Pattern Had IH actually Marketed the Rear PTO for More than Just a frame Mounted rear Mowing deck and Running Grain elevators It Might have Caught on Better But the PTO could only Be Mounted On the 3speed Gear Trans as well But By the Time the Rear PTO for GTís really Caught On IH wasnít In the Garden tractor Business anymore. See when I was a Child one Of My Neighbors was the IH test engineer for Cub Cadet and IH ROPS systems So I got to see Many of the Narrow Frames Before the saw Production as well as the wide Frames and The Late Donald Stevenson Told Me the PTO really came as a after thought It wasnít Until the 82 series that they really found the right use for it Once they decided to Put Cat 0 3point Hitch on there 982 in 1963 IH had Looked at Making the attachments On Cub Cadet shaft drive Based On what they had seen on Bolens So they Had to do a tractor redesign which they did Hence the Narrow Frames 70 & 100 But they decided Once It went Into production it was to costly to make the Shaft driven attachments But They Had Though about a True 3point Hitch at the Time as well Instead They Stuck with there Internal what they Called a 3point Pictured above In this thread and IH Made attachments specifically for the Internal IH 3point But with a Brinly Adapter Most Could Use Sleeve Hitch attachments which were faster to Mount to the tractor Though the IH Implements are Really Just as Fast if You havenít Mounted the Brinly adapter Yet Then a sleeve Hitch Implement requires one more Pin For Mounting Meaning the Implement Pin Itself

Thanks Sergeant!

You have provided a wealth of info! The two cubs I have are a 128 (hydro) and a 124(gear). Did I understand correctly that the PTO would only work on gear tractors and not hydros? I've found a NOS complete PTO kit but want to make sure it would work on the 128 before I bought it.

Your 128 Should Be a 3speed Gear Not Have a Hydrostatic Transmission
Wide Frames Series 6
Model 86 3speed Gear
Model 108 3speed gear
Model 109 Hydrostatic
Model 128 3speed Gear
Model 129 Hydrostatic
Model 149 Hydrostatic
Model 169 Hydrostatic

Your Narrow Frame series 4
124 should be a 3speed Gear as well

Because In Your Original Post You were saying it had Hydraulic Lift Which is What I though You were Talking about Because Both the 124 & 128 Are suppose to Be Grear Driven Tractors and Both should Take the transmission driven Rear PTO. But a Hydrostatic Driven Tractor will Not Take a Rear PTO. I Just figured someone Had Put a Narrow Frame Hydraulic Lift Kit On Your 128 Because the 128 Only Had a Electric Lift Kit avaliable for It. Can You post a Picture Of Your 128 Left & Right sides Here is a easy way to Post Pictures http://www.mytractorforum.com/showthread.php?t=1594 Just so I Know where talking about the same Tractor

Sergeant,

I will post a couple of images this evening of the 128. This particular tractor has a hydrostatic transmission and a hydro lift. Both appear to be factory installed. I'm not real familiar with the CC, someone may have installed a 128 hood? Is there a model # on the frame you can also reference?

Thanks

The 129 was Hydrostatic with the same every thing except a different Hood decal I'm Guessing the Last Owner Or some owner along the Lines Put the wrong Decal On it

I have a feeling someone Changed the decals On Your tractor at One time or a Owner Had it converted to a Hydro Because even In the Cub Cadet Operators Manual It say the 128 is a Gear driven Tractor

I also sent You a PM with the 128 Operators Manual I have a feeling it's a 129 with different decals.
Is Your Tractor a 12HP?

The tractor is a 12HP. Everything looks original, my guess is the previous owner may have gotten a stripped down 129 and rebuilt it with some 128 parts. If the decals were replaced it must have been many years ago. The tractor "appears" to be untouched. I'll take a closer look at it tomorrow.
