Default k321 hard to start in cold weather

I have a tractor that has a k321 14hp kohler. The first few years I owned it (6 to 8 years ago I got it), I just hit the key and it ran. Now, when the weather turns cold, it just cranks and cranks and, unless I put a small heater on it for a while, it won't start. In warm weather it starts up like it always did. Could this be an ethanol thing? It cranks strong so the battery is not in question.

Did you check to see if the choke is closing all the way inside the carb ???

You know, I haven't. The cable is pretty hard to pull so maybe it's hanging up in there. So simple I blew right by it. Thanks Kevin, I'll look tomorrow and see what's what.

I had the same problem (12 HP Kohler) and replaced a spark plug to coil wire and that solved my issue.

Sounds like that will be step 2 then. Thanks.

The old wire was "leaking" electric really bad I inadvertently touched it while the engine was running and got lit like a Christmas tree! That is what told me it was time for a new one!

It's chilly here this morning (low 40's) which was the perfect time to try this choke thing. I went out to the shop, took the air cleaner cover off and worked the choke a little. It looked as though it was closing all the way but it wasn't quite getting there and the cable was pulling very hard. I took my finger and closed it the rest of the way then did a cold start. It cranked once and it was running at an idle. I guess it doesn't have to be open much to make a difference. I hope to get a new choke cable at lunch time today and I think I will go ahead and replace the plug to coil wire while I'm at it. Can't hurt and, if anything, I'll have a spare. I'll report back when all this is done and I'll either have good news or more questions. Probably won't get to it until the weekend. Thanks guys.

Looks like we have a winner. I put the new choke cable on tonight along with a new wire from the plug to the coil. As it turns out, I didn't have to do the wire but, what the heck, winter is coming so it's better now than when I need it. Fired right up. I moved it out to the barn and will give it another go int he morning just to be sure but I think we're good to go. Thanks everyone! These simple little things can really get you sometimes.

Well I thought it was fixed. I tried to start this thing yesterday and it cranked and cranked and then back fired. After that, it started and ran fine. I'm starting to think I need a carb rebuild. How much play around the throttle shaft is considered too much?

There should be no play, I had several, B/S and my K321, Makes starting hard, and you can't get to idle right. I was able to locate a brass bushing at T/S and dremel it to replace the old one.it fit in the recesed part on the carb. I heard some don't have this recess. Then a new throttle shaft should fix it.
