Default how do you measure a starter

not sure how to measure housing length
from what point to what point do i measure

Any starter I've measured has been from the surface that contacts the bellhousing to the nose that the shaft goes thru. I think it would depend on what the seller specs tho, overall length maybe?......Mike

I would think housing length would be from contact to engine to end,where power hooks up.Gotto ask--why would you need such measurement?

need a new starter and it gives a choice of two it depends on housing length one is like 3 5/8 and 4 3/8 not sure which to get

I'd measure the length of the round tube-like part of the starter, the black painted section, between the end pieces.
