Default 318 on Craigslist, Opinions?

So saw this pop up on my craigslist and really not versed in what to look for or what a piece of equipment like this should run, but have always wanted a little green and yellow of my own Thoughts/Opinions?

From what I've read here on MTF, that's a pretty good price. Lots of 318 info available in this forum.

The 318 is a really good garden tractor.... I have 2 of them. As for the price its a tad on the high side but it looks in real nice shape.. Do you know if it has the b43g onan or the p218 one in it? Both are really good motors its just the p218 is a newer engine.. Just like everything the 318 is getting up there in years and its possible it could need a few things replaced so if your handy at that thats not a problem... Let us know what you decide on way or the other...... gary

I'd want to get the Serial number and engine type. It's hard to tell but looks like it may have been recently repainted (pictures are blurry).

That price is high average. If you want it to keep then get it, but you will not make any money on resale. You will see folks advertise in them in the 2000-2500 range but you are crazy to pay that much unless it has a lot of attachments on it.

I bought one this spring for $700 that needed new belts, blades and the throttle cable adjusted but only had 500 hours on it. I sold it for $1100. If you search hard enough you can find decent 318's for cheaper than the one listed but you may have to drive for it.

318's are one of the most popular models of JD's but they also made around a million of them so if you don't like the price or shape it's in, there will always be another 318.

For $1800 you can find a 400 or 420 for that price and they arguably more capable tractors but much bigger so if you are using them to mow, they may not be what you want/need if you have a small lot with lots of obstacles.

Looks in decent shape minus the grill emblem. Price is a little high for just a mower deck but other attachments are still available.

I guess prices in that neck of the woods must be lower. In the amount of time that thing has been listed it would have sold three times here. If that is an Onan 318 it would get $2200-2500 all day long here and that'd still be a good deal. I think it looks clean- maybe repainted- if there are truly better deals than that back east maybe wait. Here, however, you wouldn't even be talking about it right now- it'd be in someone else's yard.

Thats low hours on an Onan. My BF/MS 16hp has almost 4000 and hasnt been rebuilt. If the hours are correct, and its as good as it looks, it seems like a solid buy to me.

That's pretty close to me.

Anyway, yes David316, in our area that is high average price. As PA318Guy said, we need a serial number and better photos to see what the particulars are.

PM me if you set up a viewing appointment and want some help looking at it.

He has been trying to sell that for a while and it needs a battery. The price is a little high i think, and why would a very nice 318 need a battery? Talk about a critical selling point for a turn key 318.

That does not speak well of the guy, Tanner. He wants high on the average price range, and has a tractor which will not start????

His tractor haus comment makes me wonder if he's not just an ametuer flipper.

Geeze, Pro-Start batteries are only about $45 at Sears.

I my area that would be a very resonably priced tractor. Looks clean from the pictures.

Everyone, thank you so much for all the information and I really really appreciate your offer D-Doug to possibility meet me and help look the tractor over. I think I may try to wait a bit and see if another mower comes along that is either a bit better priced, or comes with some attachments as it sounds like that is what I am hearing to be the advice from most of the replies. But thanks again for all the input!
