This may have been happening occassionally for a while now, but within the past week I've found that I can no longer use my IE 8 browser "Back" button because somewhere along the line an interstitial page of the form:
http://googleads.g.doubleclick.net/xxxxxx is crammed into my browser history. I typically read through the JD Lawn and Garden Tractor thread listing and clicking on individual threads I am interested in reading. When I get to the end of the page, I used to use the browser "back" button to get back to the list page. Can't do that anymore, I get hung on this inserted page and have to use the browser's pull down history so that I can step back two pages in history. Was this introduction an intentional thing to drive more advertising on pages, or is this something broken that will hopefully soon be fixed. Thanks

I haven't run into any issues with Firefox, but maybe it's specific to IE.
Do you have a 3 button mouse? If so, when you see a thread you want to read, click with the middle button. It'll open a new tab with the thread you want to read. Then, just X it out and you are back where you started.

Thanks for advice and comments.
FWIW, and in order: 1. I can click with middle button to get a new browser window to open. But, it takes longer to open that way, and it opens a new tab, so that when it is time to close the tab, it takes me through the "Do you want to close this tab, all tabs, or cancel?" window, which is a few too many steps to qualify as a work around. Though it was an interesting test. 2. I tested with Safari and Chrome and both exhibit the same problem as IE. 3. Backspace key on keyboard seems to work the same as the "Back" icon on the IE 8 browser, that is, it just re-displays the same page. 4. Ingersoll444 You are not alone. I guess I use the back icon infrequently except in the MTF threaded discussions, so I haven't noticed it on other sites. I suspect some combination of browser settings and/or pop-up/page hijacking protection might solve this for us. FWIW, I Googled "googleads.g.doubleclick" (I know, like sending the fox to check the hen house) and found thousands of hits, with hundreds of folks complaining of the same symptoms as I, using all manner of browser including Firefox, Chrome, Safari. . . It seems that Google bought AdSense and implemented the doubleclick technology to track clicks on advertising links on sites that use AdSense. I assume MTF uses AdSense. I also assume that most people have some setting or another that eliminates the browser history corruption that I am experiencing. I'll keep searching, and in case anyone is interested, here is a screen shot of what my browser history looks like when the hijack has occurred ( I know there are a few personally identifiable items there, I whited out the key ones):

FWIW, I recently "upgraded" to IE9 (after waiting until I thought maybe the bugs would be worked out of it). It also has a problem with the back button in that it takes multiple clicks on the button to get back where you thought you just came from. The little "preview window" that comes up when hovering over the back button before clicking on it shows the googleads.g.doubleclick.net address.
It is a nuisance, but I don't know if the browser should be addressing the problem or if it's something that is caused by the site being visited and thus the responsiblity of the site? Gerald |

I get this problem w/IE9 on several news sites that I visit. It's a blatent attempt to keep you reading their advertising.
Right click on your "Back Arrow" at the top L. of the page and left click from the drop-down on a page before you got "hooked". They can load pages faster than you can backclick sometimes but this method gets you out right away. |

Thanks, HH. I'll try that.
I just got back on here a litttle while ago and find that the problem has gone away!!! It has been doing it for at least a week; now it's OK. Maybe someone changed something on the site. I have not tried other sites yet. Gerald Oops! It just came back....spoke too soon. Last edited by G-1; 08-21-2011 at 07:06 PM. |

For what it's worth, this has become a serious usability issue for me on three different PC running IE 8, Safari, and Chrome browsers. It is reported on other forums by other people as happening on Firefox and Mosaic browsers too. It must be the case that many, perhaps most people are not having this problem. I'd like to learn what settings or utilities can circumvent this browser hijacking.
Any more ideas for me to try? Thanks for all the ones already suggested.

there has been an issue with IE9. In the last few days I was told there has been an upgrade for IE9 that is supposed to fix this. If you are experiencing the google ads breaking or grinding the site to a crawl please make sure you have the latest version of IE9 and if you do and its still happening shoot me a PM with the details.

Thanks Ken, I know where the cookies options are, I don't know what cookies options might turn this googleads hijacking off.
And, Thanks Philip, but I am still running Windows XP where IE 9 is not an option.

Added *.g.doubleclick.net to "Restricted Sites" list on "Security" tab of the Internet Options screen in IE 8. Seems to have made a significant difference. I have not seen the browser history hijack since.

I've been having this problem for a few days now, I need to click the back button several times quickly, to go back.. sometimes i end up going back too far, it's becoming a real pain to back up.
take a look at this screen shot, i went from the craftsman forum index to a post, but google hijacked it, and to go back from the post to the craftsman index, there are 3 pages in the way. ![]() it's a little ridicoulus. Dave XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX ADDED: It seems to quit once I log in, so my question is Is it stopping because I'm a site supporter, and have to deal with fewer ads? Or is it stopping because I logged in? and the big question.. if this is what non members see, will they think that the site is a pain in the *****, and not join?
