Smile John Deere 175 w\38" mower deck

Gentleman...and Ladies Im sure...Thanks for the welcome.

My name is Pat. I am a Automotive Technician at a Suzuki Dealership in Arlington, Texas. My primary focus here is to help a friend of mine who has a John Deere 175 riding mower with a 38" deck. He broke the mower belt ( the one that drives the blades, not the belt that connects from the deck to the engine) But anyway...he bought the same size belt as the one that broke. With the deck out from under the tractor and looking at the belt routing, according to some photo's out of the manual, it appears we have the routing correct, yet the belt is several inches too long. He swears its the same belt. Any clues as to what might be going on here...?? ( the belt is 65" )

I realize this is supposed to be an introduction letter...just trying to save time...as I dont have a whole lot to spare. If you kind folks could possibly lead me in the right direction...I would be most greatful.....

Thanks...Pat

Cat385,

Thanks for the fast response. Great photo's of the same deck. The photo that "little tractor guy" shows, appears to be the exact deck/setup. My problem is verifying what the belt length is. I dont suppose you would know that offhand?? when I went to johndeere parts site listed on that same thread, it ask for model nmber...I enter "John Deere 175" for tractor model and get no match....??? any help for the uninitiated ??

Thanks a million.....theroad

On that link just put in 175 in the model box, it's under item #10391 at the bottom of the results page.

Trick is to find the mower deck in the 175 listing... Here's the sectional drawing of the sheaves and the belts...

The two belts on the deck are # 47 and # 48
47 M77988 V-BELT 1 PRIMARY (SUB FOR M82734)
48 M82462 V-BELT 1 SECONDARY

Pretty sure it is the Secondary belt your friend needs to pick up, they should contact their JD Dealer and order an M82462...

Hope this helps!

Dear Sirs, Again would like to thank you for all your help. I ran over to my friends house the other day...belt in hand...I had printed a copy of the photo "littletractorguy" had sent of his 38" deck. For the life of me, I dont know what I was doing different...but the belt went right on and fit perfectly. I felt like a moron...oh well...its works...every once in a while...things just fall into place...

Thanks tractor guys...I know where Im coming for all my lawn garden and ranch equipment from now on.....

The guys are great!!!!
Took us a while but we finally determined the PO put the drive pulley on the bottom and the mower blade pulley on on top.
The big pulley should be on top

Hey everyone!

Forgive me if this is a silly question - but in littletractorguy's diagram, item #9 (tensioner pulley?) -- can anyone please tell me if that is supposed to freely rotate as the belt moves?

Mine doesn't, and it sure looks to me like it should...

Thanks!

The tensioner or idler should move with the belt. If yours is stiff or frozen up then the bearings may be shot.
