Default Trouble with John Deere 214-noisy transmission?

I have a JD 214 lawn tractor. Has a 4 speed transmission with the variable speed control lever. On an incline, when you are pulling in 3rd or 4th gear, it mades a loud roaring sound. The sound quits when going downhill or not in a hard pull. Trying to figure if it is a bad pulley bearing or something wrong with variable speed control or in the transaxle?? Have checked the transaxle and it full of gear oil. Has anyone run into this kind of problem before or have any ideas what to check to find the problem??
Thanks.

I would check out the Vari-speed belts and all its components.

Are you talking about a sound like a cross between a rusty hinge on a closing dumpster door and a tuba? My 214 always does that if I'm in 3rd or 4th and I advance the variator lever to full speed. I changed my gear oil but it still makes the noise.

Rear end noise is a standard feature on 214. There are some gear oils that are supposed to help - read through my 214 thread is you want to see what others posted on my problem. Link in my signature.

Thanks. I guess the variable speed controls, belts, etc. will be the easies place to start.

My 210 whines also ,have heard several others ,that sounded the same. It;s the way they were built.. It has been discussed here before , most all the 200 series transmissions ,have a whine.

My sound is like a 1950's old-style straight tooth geared transmission. Thanks.
