Default Starter spins, not engaging flywheel

My neighbor has a GT5000 with a Briggs 24hp ELS, the year is unknown, but it is one with the flawed aircleaner design.
The starter spins but does not engage the flywheel. I told her I would look into it, but our schedules are so mixed up I can't really troubleshoot it, so here I am.
Is this starter rebuildable or does she need to buy the whole thing?

My guess would be the bendix gear is stripped. On my opposed twin it was about a 60 minute repair and cost about $5. I honestly don't know how similar or different the set up on her engine will be. More help will be along. This thread of mine may help though.....

Sounds like it just needs a new gear and spring, Very fixable IMO

Your neighbor could try tapping the starter and see what happens if that hasn't already been attempted.

Yep, I'd check to see if the Bendix is stuck before presuming anything. Tapping on the starter gently while turning it over is a good idea^^^. Keep your eyes on moving parts though.

The starter drive on my Yard-Man 's Kohler Magnum has been sticking since I got it way back in the 90's!...I have to spray it with Wd-40 or something similar to get the drive to engauge the flywheel often,I think the shaft rusts up that is slides on in a matter of days..so far I haven't had to replace it ...I used the "straw" on the spray can nozzle to lube it by squirting it at the starter drive thru the screen over the flywheel..if I dont spray it I can sit there trying to start it until the battery dies, without the starter gear ever touching the flywheel--one squirt and it'll kick right in!...

Leave the hammer in the tool box. Taping the side of the starter may result in the internal magnet breaking into smaller pieces which will jamb the starter which then will need disassembly.
If the starter gears won't engage the flywheel, does the starter's geared surface slide on the starter's shaft? Remove any old lubricant and residue, then re-lube it up, using just abit of lube. Slide the gear up and down by hand.
Mke sure the starter's mounting bolts are tight.
Have a real good charge in the battery.
Tighten the large 'hi-current' posts on the solenoid.
Clean and tighten the positive and the ground lead frame attachment points, as well as on the actual battery.

Starter gear replacement is simple, but time consuming. The pin at the top is a bear, and the springs fly most anyplace. All it takes is some patience.

Thanks, all. Now at least we have some ideas where to start.

Kbeitz is right--when I jump my Yard-Man with a strong car battery it almost never refuses to engauge the flywheel, but try starting it with a weak battery and all it'll do is spin the starter ,but NOT the engine!...I replaced the starter solenoid last year and that helped a lot,it eliminated the "wont grab" problem until the battery started dying of old age!..
