Default John Deere won't shut off!!!

Hello everyone, I'm new here and did some searching but came up dry. Ok heres my issue.

I have a John Deere 111 11hp B&S 5sp. Ive had a no start issue for some time now. I bought a new coil, and still no spark. I checked all the wiring connections for corrosion/loose, cleaned them up added some die electric grease. I discoverd that the previous owner cut the seat switch and just left it be.... so did I.

So then I rented a puller to see if my flywheel key broke, sure enough its broke, swapped it out and discoverd I do not have breaker points and condenser... Thats why my new coil wont work. Put everything back together, installed the old coil and boom she fires up.

But she wont shut off!!! I can turn the key "off" and even take it out! You should have seen the look on my wifes face as I was standing there with the key in my hand while the engine was running.

I checked the switch with a meter, I get resistance with the switch off, and nothing with the switch on. This Deere is very basic, not much wiring, not many features and I just cant figure it out.

Please help me out, my grass is getting taller by the second. Sorry for such a long post. I appreciate any help guy and gals.

Sounds like a bad ignition switch, if it runs, why cant you mow?

Ya your right, I can mow I just wanted to figure out the issues first then be done with it. Ignition switch seems to be working fine. I'll keep digging, thanks for the reply.

You probably forgot to hook up (or perhaps broke) the kill wire. Frequently a yellow wire, running back to the mag terminal of the igntion switch.

There are 2 white wires on the back of your ignition switch. One goes to the kill terminal on your magneto and the other one goes straight to ground. When you turn the key off these 2 white wires become shorted together and your magneto becomes grounded and kills the spark killing the motor.

Ok thanks guys, heres something intresting. The mower will not start with the coil ground connected. If I hold the coil ground in my hand, she starts and runs smooth. To kill the motor, I simply touch the coil ground to any metal and she quits running no problem. But again it will not start with the coil ground bolted down by the throttle assembley (along with the white wire)

This is functioning *exactly* as designed.
Much like an old push mower, it acts as a kill switch.
My guess is this will be identified in the wiring schematic as to where it goes.
If not, then wire up yourself a new kill switch or properly with the ignition switch using the coil ground.

If you are calling the wire that comes off of the magneto the coil ground that should not go to ground but should go to the white wire that goes to "m" on your ignition switch. Then when you turn the key off it will jump it to ground through the ground wire going to g terminal on your ignition switch and kill the engine.

The thin black wire that comes off the armature(coil) runs to the carberator side of the motor and bolts down along with a white wire, that white wire appears to run to "G" on the key switch.

That thin black wire is going to the wrong white wire. There are 2 different white wires, one goes to g on the switch and one goes to m on the switch. If you connect that thin black wire to the white wire that goes to m your problem should be solved...with the key word being should.

The 3rd page is the diagram I used when mine would not shut off. Thanks again arniearni. Print the pages off and look at those while you stand at the tractor.

Well, I installed a kill switch and shes back up and running again

Thanks everyone for the help, I appreciate it.

Without having to star a new thread, I pulled my blades off to sharpen them and they seem to be mulching blades however, they dont appear to be the same. I would like to buy a new set, so what do you guys recommend?

I dont have a bagger, and my deck has just a square hole, no chute or the like. Although it did come with steel plate which blocks the opening on the deck.

I dont know much about blades so what exactly should I be looking for with this setup?
