Default electronic ignition conversion (Omega electronic ignition)

A friend told me about the Omega electronic ignition conversion kits for small engines and I was wondering if anyone here was familier with them? I'm working on a very old Briggs engine with Magnematic ignition. (The mag is mounted under the flywheel and the magnet is on a disc on the crankshaft rather than on the flywheel)) And rather than try and locate a used coil I would prefer to convert it to electronic ign. If anyone has done a conversion of this type I would sure appreciate any information. So far I havent been able to find out much about the Omega set-up. Thanks, Litz

There were some good articles on this down in the Walkbehind section. You may want to check there for some good posts. In the meantime I will try to look up the thread.

Here you go. This is a top-notch article. There just might have been another good article in this section, too, but don't know for sure.

Enjoy!

I convert all older points engines over to electronic. All I have ever had to do is get a newer electronic coil, mount it, and works like a charm.

Just make sure you have the right coil, like 2HP-4HP briggs are the same, 5-6HP, them 7HP-18HP I think are the same. You'll know because the bolt holes will be different.

Dont try to drill thru coils, its a headache. Old electronic coils that work are easy to find for less than $10.

Hi Litz, I've had limited success with the Omega system, they seem to work on some of the Briggs engine have had no success on Tecumseh engines, but if your problem is the coil the Omega will not work the Omega is a points / condenser eliminator only nothing to do with the coil you must have a good working coil to make it work. Good luck with your project.

Litz, check the other post you started about the Briggs without spark. I posted a link to a cheap fix you may find interesting.
