IH 404 hydraulic filter question

I took the hydraulic filter can off my 404 to clean it out and put a new filter it, but all there is in it is a screen, no filter that looks like the on I just bought. the filter I have will fit inside the screen, but its shorter than the screen. looks like it needs a cap and spring on one end to work properly. is there supposed to be a filter in there or just the screen? my parts book didnt' have a photo of the filter so that was no help. really would like to see a pic or diagram of this if anyone has one. its a long way to the IH/case dealer to look at their parts diagram, and I'd like to get it back together and working again. thanks.

well I just found a diagram on the ih/case website. I'm missing a part. theres a oil filter valve assembly thats supposed to go on the bottom of the filter element. hope thats not too expensive at the dealer! and I hope they have it in stock. ouch.

Call first to see if they even still carry it. I've found they do still carry a lot of the older tractor parts but there are some things they no longer do.

More common parts across different series of tractors though are usually available so this may be.
