Default Adding a winch to my JD 214

I bought the bargain Harbor Freight 2000# winch before winter with the hopes of using it to lift and lower my Berco blower. It's just too large to fit anywhere convenient on my Craftsman such that it could be oriented to lift the blower. So I put it on a shelf for future use.

I originally wanted to mount it on the front of a tractor, like you would on an off road vehicle. It would then be in the way of blowers and blades, so that wouldn't work. Then today I got the idea of mounting it to the drawbar of my 214. I had to drill one 5/16" hole to run a bolt, but it fits nicely and I don't think it will interfere with tow behind attachments, except perhaps on a really sharp left hand turn.

Here is the winch bolted to the draw bar:

Here's what it looks like on the tractor:

I Since it is not a permanent installation (yet), I bought some wing nuts for the winch:

and the battery connections:

so that the remote power switch can be easily connected and disconnected. Here is the wiring running fore and aft from the switch. You can also see the cable in this picture:

Here's a picture of the switch. I would like to figure out a way to permanently afix the switch to the right fender of the 214 without too much damage. The switch has no brackets, tabs or holes for permanent mounting and drilling such would ruin it's waterproof properties. I'm not thrilled with the idea of drilling into my 214's fender either. How long do you think something like velcro would last?:

That's it. It works great. Tomorrow I'm going to use it to pull down the top of a tree that got hung up on a branch while falling, it's first real job. Then I might use it to pull the Toro 212-5 out of the woods and snow. More seat time!

Velcro and double sided tape would work. Velcro is used in boats and stuff so I think it would work.

ggsteve, you will want to use doublelock Velcro tape. I used it on my electric box I made for my cab and it's holding great! You can find it at boat stores!

Try to find velcro(aka hook and loop)with the 3M adhesive at least 1 inch wide. That's what we used when we reupholstered boats.Holds really well.May I ask a favor?Would you please, make a plastic or rubber cover for those winch terminals? They look a little to exposed hanging lower than the tractor.I made one out of a small plastic freezer box.It wasn't specific for a winch, but it was for a Ford solenoid.

Thanks to all for the tips about "marine grade" Velcro. That's a good idea about protecting the terminals. Once I have the switch mounted I will snake and zip tie the wiring under the fender pan. Perhaps I will use that heat shrink tubing on the terminals at that point, and maybe even cut off the extra threads so they don't get hooked on anything.

Does anyone know the purpose of this? The package called it a "hook strap" and I am instructed to hang the loop on the end onto the winch hook. Why I don't know.

when your manually pulling out the line, it is suppposed to be safer to grab that then the hook directly.

I've heard that the strap is in case your line touches electric when pulling out you don't get shocked. Not sure that I buy that but I don't think they'd last too long. My BIL bought me a winch for Christmas, I'm trying to figure a method to use it front and rear on the 318 and on the trailer and truck. Some type of "universal" mount that I have an initial idea on! Looks like your already getting some use out of yours!

Velcro would work, but I made a holder for my Custom to hold it while using or I can easily take it out to use it. small flat strap and a peice of 2' sq tube.

that is what it is for and also when rewinding you use it to put some tension on the line.

That's what the Warn manual said for the winch I had. It's just a safety feature in case an idiot (like me) mounts it and doesn't put the electric solenoid cover back on.Baisicly,so they can say the operator was at fault for not following the supplied safety directions, when someone sues them(not like me).
