Default JD 170 Snow Blower - How do you remove auger from blower housing?

I am breaking my JD170 blower down so I can remove the rust and repaint. The blower chute is going to get sand blasted, but I am going to wire wheel the blower housing because I would have to wait until the sandblasting place was doing an outside job.

I have everything removed except for the auger.

One on side of the auger there is the gear that drives the auger shaft. It had a set screw, but it is still stuck on there good.

There is also bearings assembleys on each side of the housing, one assembly is hiding behind the gear I just mentioned.

I am not sure what order I should be tackling this. I don't want to bugger up parts if there is a better procedure to break it all down.

Thanks!!!!

I WAS gonna go the route you are describing but decided to "get in there" as best I could with an angle grinder and sandpaper with the auger still attached. In the end I painted it yellow and it turned out GREAT. Glad I passed on the dis/re-assembly...but if you are into it go for it (alas I have no real useful info here!).

My buddy helped me take mine out.( well I mostly assisted) after unbolting the ends and shearbolt etc. there are 2 keyways to watch out for. Then we had to hit it with a sledge hammer ( busted a couple of 2X4's ) as cushions and used some " unclean words " the shaft finally moved !!
you need to support the auger as you remove the shaft.
Good luck and I feelit is a 2 man job at best !!!!!!

I'm sure you read my post and pics on my #38 reno

Just fitting sandpaper in wouldn't work. To much rust due to PO sucking up gravel on his driveway.

I got it all apart now except for the cutting edge. The cutting edge bolts are spinning. Will need to grind the heads off.

I am leaning towards having everything blasted if I can find a place that has a big enough cabinet.

KATT yes I read your post but haven't reread it. It is a one man job with a 2 jaw gear puller, but you have to take your time!

Same here, I can reuse it. It will go back on this season, but I think plastic strip made of cutting board material might work well.

Good idea don't know if you knew but the resto was for my Nephew.
He got all you see in the thread the restored 175 the restored #38 blower and the restored #38 mower. The good news his father my brother picked up the ( purchase) bills for nephews Christmas present. I supplied the labor and replacement parts as my contribution. and I keep Rusty for my trouble !!
I never got anything like that for any of MY Christmas'

When I rebuilt the blower for my GT275 I ran into the same problem with the cutting edge bolts. I laid a board over top of a couple of bolt heads, clamped it down with a c-clamp, and was able to get the nuts off. Hope this helps, grinding off bolt heads ain't no fun.

I only needed to grind two. The other ones I notched with a cut off wheel and used a big screw driver to hold the bolts still.

Dropped all the parts off for sandblasting, they should be ready sometime next week
