Red face Battery Exploded.

This battery has been marginal for a long time. Tody I put the charger on it. The Green led said it was charged.
Took the charger off, sat on the seat, turned the Key.....BANG!

Felt like somebody hit me in the butt with a bat.
The CRACK sound was about like a .22 or a .410 shot.

Blew the caps off the battery cells and smoke was drifting up.

Good thing I had that seat down and wasn't looking at the Battery as I turned the key!

Any guess's as to what happend?

Dead short in the Battery. Happens more often than you think. Glad you had the seat down.

You had a dead short somewhere close by--and when you turned the key--

It ignited /sparked the escapeing gases that had collected under the seat--at the battery..
Maybe not your exact sequence--but very close..

I had a 6-volt battery explode in my face years ago on a 1951 Ford truck.. --with a dead short--

same principle.I would wager.....

Or--like Sonny stated--bad battery itself..

YES...BTW I was a battery reconditioner for 4 years so I have had a number blow up on me but always was wearing protective equipment. The fumes from the two fused cells were explosive and you created the spark by turning the key. I had a similiar experience by just turning on the light to a shed that contained batteries being charged by a gang charger as one had shorted during the night ....you see the crystalized acid on the plates settled to the bottom over time and once the join as a sludge on the bottom of the battery you have fused cells ... these cells can be usually determined by placing the battery at full charge for a couple of minutes in the beginning with the covers of the battery cells off and if one cell bubbles more profusely than all the others and smells like sulphur turn off charger and leave it alone for at least an hour than take it off the turned off charger and take it to the scrap yard or be prepared for an explosive event....btw you wer VERY lucky THIS time.

wow! now thats some scary stuff! something to remind us all to not take 12v for granted.

I had a bad experiance the other weekend, i was testing a guys multimeter, and i dont know what i did, but it melted the wires in my hands and the unit itself was smoking like mad.. just after i told his wife " oh its only 12volts dont worry it wont catch fire" then i touched it on the teminals of the batt and that happened.. boy did i feel dumb!

I had one blow up on me when I was younger. No fun at ALL!! I was lucky. I was near water, and was just left with a tiny scar on my face.

Sounds like the meter was likely set to Amps, effectively a direct short. When I was in the Navy another guy on the boat did that with a 450VAC panel and was blind for ~3 days. He sight came back but he was still and idiot (there were several other reasons).

My brother lost an eye when a battery blew up in his face. You really have to be careful when working with an explosive product like a battery.

Wow ,glad you were ok that could have been really nasty. If any battey acid spilled make sure you rinse it all really well saw it happen in a car and it ate the paint off everything and then a bad case of rust set in .Bottom of the hood above it, the battery box and the frame rail under it too.Maybe even some bakeing soda, just a thought.

With 12 volt systems, it's not usually the voltage that does the damage, it's the current that creates the heat. Even a small 12 volt battery can put out a lot of current for a short time, and that means a lot of heat.

Sparks and explosive gasses are, of course, a different matter.

I have only seen one battery explode, and that was enough for me. It was our shop instructor showing us what not to do. It cost him a pair of pants, a shirt, and a tie. No bodily harm to anyone, fortunately.

My father-in-law had one blow in him a few years ago when he was charging the batteries for his JD 3020. Luckily he wasn't facing it directly when it blew. He had small burns on his cheek, ear and neck. Luckily he could wash off in the barn nearby. Needless to say he's been a bit gunshy of charging a battery since.
