I just got a used gator amt 622...with a kawasaki engine....and tuff torq transmission...a kt 30..I think.....its nearly impossible to shift into forward or reverse with the motor running....so I have to start it in gear.....it looks to have a clutch on the engine...(I am new to this but I think this is the primary clutch)..and another clutch on the transmission...(secondary clutch?)...the idle is correct...in fact maybe a little slow...but I cant shift unless the motor is almost not turning at all.....the belt between the cluthes always turns...even at idle...is that correct??....or should it disengage completely? A neighbor is telling me to push the engine back 1/4 inch...and maybe that would allow the belt to disengage...but he might be guessing.... would anyone out there know if the clutch is the problem...or the trans??...any advice would be greatly helpful!!..
thanks Ron |

Sorry I cant help you very much here, I know someone will help you out. I do know that if my quad is idling to high I cant shift into gear. Has it always done this since you got it or something that came up.

I have a Gator TH 6x4 and it is doing almost the same thing just not as bad, but it is very hard to shift. I know the mechanics quite well up at Deere here so I think I will pay them a visit after work this afternoon.

Well,
I went to the dealer yesterday and talked to the service guys. The normal problem is the clutch buttons on the driven (secondary) clutch. They are a wear item and cost abt 10 bux from the dealer. When you take the shroud off the belt you can see these little buttons on the tip if the clutch fingers. There should be no metal to metal contact on this clutch assy or it can be damaged to the tune of 3 or 4 hundred bux. I would think taking your time you could change all 6 in abt 30 min.

Hey Saskman...thanks for the info!!!...I will give it a try...now I have to tell you I know very little about this...but I am assuming the secondary clutch is the clutch on the trans?..right?..not the one on the engine?..I will take a look..see if I can find those buttons!..thanks again...

looks to me like it has seen some rough use, perhaps the owner replaced the broken front plastic with a copy of the JD body. the plasctic body parts on my 6X4 are cracked, broken off in places thats my assumption, the tailgate number must be some sort of company inventory number.
