$400 for a good running 200 series is not a bad deal even if you have to replace the deck

The 240 frame became the 320 thru GX355 frame. You can still get Bagger's,dozer blades, snow blower and a 30inch tiller as well as replacement decks from Deere for it. I bought a JD 240 new in 1988 had it untill I sold it to my cousin in 2000 He still uses it for Tilling his garden every year. Great tractor the only attachment that is not longer avaliable for it is a Integral hitch (sleeve hitch) That was made for it. I That sleeve hich could be lifted off the internal spring assist lever But it will take the intergal Hitch (sleeve hitch) that was made for the GT242 thru GT275 or for the GT225 thru GT245 or for the 325 thru GX355 and for the Sabre and Scotts Garden Trctors as well as X500 thru X540 manual lift Integral Hitch(sleeve Hitch) The 240 can take any attachment for the GT242 to the GX355 except the 42inch Hydraulic driven tiller For dozerblade and snow blowers and tillers you will usually need a Adapting Parts kit that run from $30.00 to about $70.00 to use those attachments on the 240. The GT242 is the model that replaced it as far as the number series go But the frame for it stayed in production until the X500 series came out.

Just to give a clear answer on attachments that will fit it.

They called the 240 thru 285 the Branch catcher models Because the Lift Lever tended to catch low hanging branchs as you were out mowing. I miss my 240 some times I wish I never sold it. That spring assist lift on it made it seem like you had hydraulic lift. Because it was so easy to lift the Snowblower on Tiller on it. I would say it very comparable to a Model X500 minus the Diff/Lock and Hydrostatic trans. It was really to me the last of the Good Gear driven tractors made by Deere in the Garden tractor line. Hope this info helps
