Default Free to me (non running) Craftsman generator-what engine?

My father-in-law gave me this 4200 watt 7.8 HP generator for free today. It's been sitting in his garage taking up space and he hasn't used it in years. Their power used to be very unreliable but now the utility company has beefed up the grid and they never lose power. Anyway, he told me that if I could get it running I'd have a pretty nice free generator. I can't figure out what kind of engine is on it though. It looks a lot like a Honda engine with overhead valves (the valve cover is stamped "OHV" just like on the Hondas), low oil shutdown, and bright red paint. It seems kind of weird though because I've never seen Craftsman equipment with anything other than a Briggs and Stratton, Techumseh, or Kohler engine. To complicate matters the recoil starter assembly is missing which usually has the brand name on it. Here are some pictures:

There is a sticker on the side that says "Generac" on it, but I'm sure that just means that Generac manufactured the units for Craftsman. Any ideas? I'm thinking that with a new recoil starter and a good carb/tank flushing I can have it humming pretty soon-just in time for summer thunderstorms!

Generac makes there own engines also. If I am not mistaken, Generac use to make Caterpillars generators. I am sure the quality is different. Generac would be the generator and the engine manufacturer for the unit you have. Hope this helps

My Craftsman self propelled push mower is powered by Honda. Runs like a top.

Look for identifying numbers either stamped into the engine cover/shroud or on the OHV cover. Post back with what you find. Some better shots of the engine would help with ID'ing, too From what I can see of it, I'd guess Tec first... but more info might prove that guess wrong.

Er... on 2nd look at your pics, take the model number from the generator head and look it up on searspartsdirect.com. Should give you info on the engine type. Looks like the model number is the first thing on the data tag on the generator head...? I'm guessing it's a 580.329140, in which case: http://www.searspartsdirect.com/part...0019432&blt=06

And even better: http://www.managemylife.com/mmh/lis_...M/L0209327.pdf

Gives an engine model of "EHC 04276" (but no make/mfr), which I'm not familiar with and don't know if it's a proprietary (i.e.; sears) designator, but based on OHV configuration and other specs, I'm going change my guess to Briggs and Stratton. Also just remembered something about briggs owning Generac or vice versa or something....

I converted my truck to burn straight vegetable oil as fuel two years ago. The truck still starts on diesel and purges the fuel lines out with diesel fuel upon shutdown, but once the system warms up (even in double digit negative temps it only takes about 10 minutes) it burns only vegetable oil from the 60 gallon toolbox tank in the bed. What you see in the picture is raw waste oil that I just picked up from one of my suppliers. That gets dumped into a 330 gallon "tote" (those big palletized cube tanks) for storage and when it's ready to use I run it through my filter system and pump it into the toolbox tank. So far I've put about 50K miles on mostly vegetable oil.

LOL-I wish! I could probably power half my block with a 78 HP engine and the proper head!

Dixie Chopper also uses Generac engines on their commercial mowers.

The OHV on the valve cover means overhead valve, nothing else.
Even the Harbor Freight Greyhound engines have OHV stamped on the cover.
