Default Kohler CV15s not starting

Turns over and tries to start but makes a back-fire sound. I checked the plug, new from last year, and it is fine. I dropped the carb bowl and cleaned it; not dirty but some water drops. I used all new fuel.
The short tube connecting the carb to the engine was torn and I rigged up my own, which may leak. Would that cause a prob?

Yep!!! Vacuum leaks cause lean mixture & you need an over-rich mixture for starting. Not much use trying 'til you 'heal the leak'. Clearing the water from the bowl was a good start though! If you'll post the particulars (model & serial #s & type Kohler (Courage or Command), you'll find more help. Lotta Kohler specialists here!

Ok, I fixed the hose. Same result. I know it isn't the choke since there is a diff when I pull it out (halfway or full).
Could it be a carb setting, or should I rebuild the carb?
Model: Kohler CV15s. (not sure what Courage or Command means)

I will have to try the spray while I start it. How do I get to the valves, tear down the engine?

you simply remove the cover that is near the spark plug to see the valves. there are 4 or 5 bolts... the cover may be stamped OHV

Help Re: Kohler CV15s not starting

I couldn't get it to run with the carb spray, and the lil backfire (I think) may have caused the flames that shot out of the carb. Not kidding!
So I guess I am to the valves now. What is it I am looking for?

I'd look at the flywheel key first, sounds like its firing out of time, its probably broken or half sheared..a valve could be stuck open also too, intake most likely if flames shot out of the carb....at least you know it has spark now though!..

Ooooooh yeah, plenty of spark. Do you know where the shear pin is?
I will look at the valves, but how do I know if one is stuck open? Are they all supposed to be closed when the engine is off?

Nice pic, a real grabber

Cool Re: Kohler CV15s not starting

Oooooooookay. I just dropped some $$ in it to get the valves fixed. I cut my grass for about 45 min, ran out of gas, and found that it would start but then stall out.
While I wait for my mechanic guy to call me back, are there any thoughts on this?
I dont expect he tweaked the carb, but maybe that is needed now?

Depending on the year, it might not be a carb adjustment to tweak.

Help Re: Kohler CV15s not starting; Changing deck now

I can't figure out how to post a new thread so I'll piggy-back on here. I need to change out my deck. Kohler engine is on a Yardman body. I can't get under it, so I thought I would flip it onto its back wheels and prop it up.
Will this cause oil, etc. to flow to bad places?

Lol!!

First of all,,,to post a new thread. Go to the forum you want to post under,,,and hit the button at the top left that says,,,"New Thread"

And yes,,it causes problems to flip a mower up vertical. To change a deck ,,there is no need to lift the tractor,,,just pull pins and slide it out.

Oh man, Id break my back if I flipped a mower up to change the deck...

Pull pins, take loose any attachment points, slip off the belt...lift up the deck lift arm and slip that puppy out. 5-6 minutes tops depending on how many bent rusty nails are in place of where the hairpins should be...haha
