Default Lawn Boy 10547 hard to start/smokes

Hello this looks like its a great forum and some of you experts can help me out. Now my grandpa moved close to me and I noticed that his lawn boy is very hard to start. I prime it a couple of times and crank for a few seconds. Do this until the battery is dead. It will take 5 or 6 hard pulls on the cord starter to get it to start finally. Once it finally starts it will have white smoke really bad for the first minute or so but will smoke a little for around 5 minutes. After its hot, it will start fine and easy. I don't know much about lawn boys so I figured I would ask some experts.

First off Welcome to MTF! In regards to the problem you are having, it could be a problem with the coil, do you have any way to check for spark when you are first trying to start it? Also these mowers are prone to leak fuel through the carburetor while the machine is not in use, therefore flooding the motor with unburned fuel, leading to hard starts and excessive smoke. This can easily be remedied by installing a fuel cut off switch and better yet a fuel switch along with a fuel filter. Turn the fuel off after each use and you should be all set. Search around this site and you will see plenty of examples of this. I'm sure others will chime in as well. Good luck with the mower, that is a very nice machine!

Ya I am thinking that adding a fuel shutoff will be a good idea. Does that lawn boy use a 1/4" fuel hose?

Could there be a problem with the coil even if it starts great when warm? I will also check the spark plug and see if it is in good condition. Thanks!

I think the fuel line size is not quite 1/4" but It works fine to replace it with 1/4", and also add some clamps at the fittings for good measure. I believe I have seen/heard some stories of the coils acting funky like that. If you need a new spark plug, the Duraforce calls for an NGK plug, not the normal Champion.

Thanks for the reply. I will go ahead and buy a new spark plug and shutoff. I figure the spark plug hasn't been change in a while anyways and its only $6. If anyone else has any other suggestions I would appreciate it.

I had one that had a small crack in the primer bulb. Without a proper prime it was hard to start. After replacing the bulb, started just fine.

Hey Bruce. Did yours smoke a lot after first starting though? This is why I am thinking that its leaking fuel into the carb when off.

Not any more smoke than a typical cold 2 cycle.

Before taking the carb apart, you might take a quick look at the primer bulb.

Add an inline filter when you add the shut-off.

Do you have any recommendations for the fuel filter? Or will the cheap B&S ones at walmart work. At this point I am just going to add the shut off and see if that improves it.

I kinda like the little sintered bronze ones from O'Reillys auto but I do use the red button briggs type too.

These are $2.49 at my local store.

How about the micron raiting? Also are these cheap filters made to be replaced every year or so?

It's a finer micron rating than I thought would be good but I've had one on my 10424 for the third season now without a problem.
