Default Rollin' - Lawn rolling that is.

1st time I've ever used a roller. Thought about buying a roller & decided to rent one & see how it goes. There had been a light rain early today, so lawn was damp which was good, temp hit 82 today (IN APRIL ????) It did smooth out most of the lumpy areas (frost heaves?). Anyway here are some pictures.

Question Re: Rollin' - Lawn rolling that is.

I've been thinking of doing that to take care of the ancient gopher hills under the grass.

But, did it work good?

I would guess it depends on how soft the dirt can get.

The best time to roll is after the frost gets outta the ground. When I think the frost is all gone, I wait a week then start. After a good rain is a good time too. On mole runs, rollers work great to smash them back down, but if the moles are still around, they will push them back up within a day..

Is THIS where that "whack-a-mole" game comes from?!?!?

Pitch fork works well too, but you gotta be patient and sneak up on them.

I rolled mine also but for the mole trails I just follow them with the front tire and it mashes them back down pretty good.

That roller, filled with water, is about 600 lbs. With driver on board isn't that getting close to exceeding the capabilities of the K46 in the X300?

I was wondering about that.

Thats a pretty large diameter roller actually and could weight a lot full.

I have a roller on backorder from northern. Its 24" x 48" if I remember right weighs in at 900 something full.

Curious to see if I can pull it up my hills without getting stuck !!

An 18" x 36" roller full of water weighs about 400 pounds

A 24" x 36" roller full of water weighs about 600 pounds

A 24" x 48" roller full of water weighs about 850 pounds

A 24" x 60" roller full of water weighs about 1150 pounds

We shouldn't be writing checks for our LTs and GTs that their transmissions can't cash.

Who cares about how much you can and can't pull, the real important safety question should be, can you actually stop the tractor with that much weight behind it especially if something goes wrong on a hill or some other weird situation?

I'm confident that the towing recommendation that JD sets in the owner's manual takes into account max load for towing and stopping.

Besides, if the transmission is laying on the ground under the tractor the brakes don't work.

I would say don't load the roller up with any weight than you need to. Just because it can hold 600# doesn't mean you have to fill it with 600#.

My generic 24 hp Craftsman with a manual handled a 24" x 36" roller without a problem.

I figured it would be a little much for my JD 100 though
