Default 445 Engine rebuild.. 22hp Kawasaki FD620D-AS 00-01

Hello

I'm in a bit of a dilemma, my FD620D engine seized up and I need to either rebuild or re-power. A short block from JD is $3000.00.. and thats out of line. And I'm thinking that JD parts will never drop in price, and parts availability will soon dwindle...

1). does anyone have a good re-builders guide with parts list to share?

or

2). do I re-power with a different engine?, has anyone done this? are there any kits available? any ideas? Kawasaki has 23hp & a 27hp engines available. Will these engines fit with minor mods.? will the side covers, and hood fit?

Thanks in advance!

Andy

Since you've nothing to lose you might as well take the 620 apart and see if it can be fixed. There are re-bore kits available if you've scored a cylinder wall. John Deere still has parts for these.

Iwould tear it apart first to see whats seized in it could only be a rod or something you can buy undersize rods and oversize pistons for these motors but there is only one main bearing that you can replace in these on the back of engine the front just goes thru the front case its just machined but the front cover and what it takes to rebuild would probaly be cheaper than buying a new engine and I do beleive you can buy parts cheaper from some place other than J DEERE like parts tree or petes small engine parts but the catch is they dont show the aso1 engine # but they do aso3 but Im sure that all internal parts are the same on all fd620d engines no matter what numbers after the fd620d Ijust went thru all this the aso1 is a jd # SO YOU BUY PARTS FROM THEM . Ijust rebuilt one of these motors and I did buy my parts from jd but they was all packaged in kawaski logo packages inside of john deere packages so they charge alot more than kawasaki sorry for the long post but maybe it will save you some money JOHN DEERE is way high on there parts and these motors are easy to work on

I will be looking at doing a rebuild soon. I purchased a 445 last August, with 206 hours and it's using oil. It loses about 1 qt every time I cut grass, (about 2 acres). After I bought it and got it home, I notices a slight blue smoke at high rev. Someone had bypassed the blow by tube that goes to the bottom of the plate on top of the carb/fuel injection, (where the air filter is located). I got the parts from Deere and fixed that, hoping that would help, but no such luck. The mower runs fine most of the time, a little ruff when I engage the PTO on the mower as it warms up, but then smooths out. No smoke at low to mid range rpm, but very noticable at higher rpm.

I know I need to do a compression test, both wet and dry. Then start a parts list. I have learned as discussed here, this Kawasaki engine, was only built for John Deere, and the parts are Kawasaki, but have a John Deere part numbers (and price). It is hard to cross reference and compare the cost between Kawasaki and John Deere.

Please keep posting your findings and progress.

170 is min on the compression with only 206 hrs cant be much wrong maybe its been hot or something maybe a cracked ring .I just rebuilt one and like a dummy I didnt write down the part # but most of the parts was kawaski packageing in john deere boxes . BUT a fd620d is all the same the aso1 or whatever is just some little thing john deere added like fuel injection or some other little thing . most parts place dont show the aso1 in their parts but they do on aso3 but the internal parts are the same on all 620's they do that so you buy parts from john deere and these are easy to work on . I bought my parts john deere but next Ill buy somewhere else after researching a little jd rapes ya on parts 160 buck for the pistons and rings else where their like 120 make sure you get everything mic'ed in case it needs bored I had to bore mine and turn the crank and rods http://www.scribd.com/doc/8567778/Kawasaki-Gas-Engines here a manual if you need it

If the engine was run with the breather disconnected from the air filter, it could have been dusted. If so, a new set of rings will probably be all you need. I once had a Kohler Command 20 on a stump grinder that used 3 quarts of oil per day. New rings, no honing (cylinders too hard) a few gaskets, and out the door good as new.
