Unhappy john deere 425 with 54" mower deck

I have a John Deere 425 with a 54" mower deck. I had noticed last year when mowing , grass comes out from under the mower deck and is caught on the left side cover of the tractor making a mess with the air cleaner.

I have inspected the underside of the mower deck and have noticed that JD has two pc of metal that I think is a deflector bolted to the deck. This mower uses the heavy aligator blades. The defector or baffles seems to be okay.

Anybody else have this problem?

Any thought on what I can do to correct this before I install deck back on tractor?

bandit,

Welcome to the forum! I don't recall having that issue with my 425/54, but I do remember having to clean the pre-screen and radiator after just about each use. Those liquid cooled Kawasaki's do not like to run hot and that is what a clogged radiator will cause.

and what your talking about is a anti blowout kit probably. You will get debris in the screens and keep them blowed out woth compressed air and clean. Thats just the nature of these designs. slkpk

I know what you are talking about. On the front of the deck on the bottom side there are these metal plates that cover a part of the bottom of the deck. My 425 with 54" deck also pushes a lot of dust and grass up into the operator and air vents etc...

My 54C does not have these plates, and it does not push the dust up into the tractor like the 54. Take the plates off and let me know how it works..

Unhappy Re: john deere 425 with 54" mower deck

I have found out out that John Deere makes for the 54" mower deck, a anti blowout kit.

Has anybody have one on their tractor and does it work for the $54 dollars they want for it?

I too have those baffles on my 54. The clippings/debris are a pain. I just bought a munching kit for it and the manual says to keep them on.

I may take them off when I install the kit to see.

What do the baffles do anyway? I think I might try taking them off.

These baffles or deflectors are suppose to keep grass from coming out from under the mower deck in front. I also found that JD also sells a 54" deck Edge Kit for 50 dollars. I have check other mower decks and have not found where they have used the baffles or deflectors or deck edge kit.

I find it so strange that JD could not design a deck without having to use all this extra parts. So much for their engineering. I have had other equipment and have never had this problem

I have taken a rubber strip that is used on the bottom of a garage door and
secured it to the holes where the bolts are locat ed to hold the baffles in place. I thiink it is just enough to correct JD problem.

When checking with the dealers about this they seem to have no answer why this problem developed. They seem to be interested more in selling you this extra parts. I love my JD tractor but frustated with their engineering

I took those baffels-deflectors off both my 54 decks years ago it does not affect the cut and all they do is gather more junk. BILL
