Question Kubota B7100 4wd Problem

Just bought a Kubota B7100 at auction. This has a standard transmission, not hydrostatic. Have never owned a tractor before. Everyrthing seems fine except that it will not go into 4WD. 2 wheel drive is perfect and am able to change gear ranges. I have moved the indicated 4wd lever up and down but can get not get it into 4WD. There were no indications of a problem, such as grinding or difficulty in moving the lever. What could the problem be? Thanks

Welcome aboard JAN MCPEEK.
Since it's new to you, I'd recommend to give it a good exterior going over, making sure everything thats supposed to be there, is.
Then if you can either get someone to drive while you observe or visa-versa, look to see if the front drive shaft is spinning. Basically you want to isolate the problem to the tranny or the front differential.
It could be that the shifter isn't engaging, due to it being broke, worn or just popped out. I'm not sure on your model but you may be able to access the tranny from the top plate.

How did you determine that 4wd is not working?
Loosen the hose clamp on the rubber boot that seals the front driveshaft tube to the front differential, slide the tube up (away from the differential) and make sure there is actually a driveshaft in there. Jack up one side of the tractor, put it 4wd and neutral, turn one rear wheel by hand. Does the front driveshaft turn? If so (assuming it's there!) then the front differential or U-joint spline is shot. If not, then it could be the rear U-joint or transmission output spline, or the shift fork broken or bent. There is a hole in the bottom of the transmission tunnel you can look up into to see the rear U-joint.
