Default John Deere 317 wiring?

Hi, I just came across this 317. It runs great and the deck is in excellent shape. It apears to be sound overall except for a wiring problem and the brake petals don't return when released. Everything works except the PTO, however there is not a seat switch on the unit and the actual wires are missing. I think if I can get the wiring straight for the switch that the PTO may actually be ok. (at least I hope so!) I bought it from the original owners son (he inherited it) If anyone has a wiring diagram for the 317 I would appreciate a copy!

Can't help you on the 317 wiring but the seat safety switch wiring is just two wires. You might want to remove the seat pan and see if they are under it, you can (for test purposes only!) run a wire from one side to the other to complete the circuit to see if the PTO works! You can still get seat switches from JD (I believe) for them. If not you see them on ebay occassionally!

The blade type seat switch is readily available from JD. I'd be willing to bet the wiring is under the fender pan as well.

The wiring diagram is included in the service manual, and they run about $45 on CD from JD.

Thanks, I was hoping to not have to buy a manual as I will not be keeping this one. I just wanted to get the PTO working and some 317 decals before I put it on ebay.

TimB09, you should start your own thread for that question. I'm not sure which model Kohler JD has in the 314 (someone should help with that) but it would have no problem running the tractor once connected up to the hydrostatic pump properly.
