As I recently found out, no you don't need a rear PTO, you can get a hydraulic tiller for your tractor.

It's a 30 inch tiller which mounts with a set of plates under your hitch plate, and onto your rockshaft. You can mount the pump under the tractor to run off the front PTO or on the rear if you have the rear PTO. I believe there was an extension available for it to make it a 42".

There is a gentleman who makes a 3PH adapter to make mounting and unmounting easier.

Heres the 30" hydraulic tiller with a 12" extension on it. The brackets for the tractor are shown in the last picture. The top part is a rod to stabilize the pump, the 2 triangular castings mount on the rockshaft and the bottom 2 mount on the rear axles. No rear pto and no 3 pt hitch required. Really nice attachment!

Via the rockshaft.

I could not find the post of the 3PH tiller adapter, but it was on weekendfreedomachines.com

My neighbor has this tiller, and told me it is about a 20-30 minute one man job.

Do all 318s have rockshafts on them? Was it an option?

Yes, a rockshaft is standard on the 318.

If you get a hydraulic tiller, you want to print the IPL from the John Deere part site and make sure you get all the mounting hardware.

The above tiller will fit al the tractors listed as far as the 316 onan, thru 430 will run off either front or Rear PTO's on the 300 series and Rear PTO only on 420 and 430. But looking at that one above I think it only set up right now to work off the 316onan thru 332 front PTO. The 200 series he is listing have a diffrent PTO setup where this tiller would not work not to metion the weight of the tiller when it has Hydraulic fluid in it.
