Default Hydrostatic Drive Fluid Question

What type of fluid needs to go in the Hydro drive units on Cub Cadet? The owner's manual for my 3185 just says, "see your Cub Cadet dealer". Well I did that and the dealer told me not to buy it from him because it was too expensive and he doesn't keep it around anyway because you never have to change it unless it gets hot.

That story didn't make much sense so I just figured I would get some next time I was at Home Depot. After all HD carries CC so they should have the drive fluid, right? Wrong! They don't carry it either. So I have to ask, what do the experts here say?

I only have a 125, I used Hytran, got it from a Case dealer. You better wait for a expert to answer. Good luck.

You can purchase two types of fluid from the Cub Cadet dealer, "Hydraulic Transmission Fluid" and "Drive System Fluid Plus, Synthetic Blend".

Does your model require synthetic fluid? I have a 2000 3206 and the fluid that was designed for it isn't even available anymore, "Cub Cadet Drive System Fluid".

I have been running Shell Rotella-T 15w40. No problems with running a bucket and blade with this fluid.

I believe the proper fluid for it now is the "Drive System Fluid Plus" and it's about $13 a quart. Don't use "Hydraulic Transmission Fluid" in you tractor. It's not compatible with your transmission. I don't know what it would do to it, but I would suspect that it would eat the seals. With the DSFP they say you never have to change you fluid. I don't think I would go that far, but I would expect the life of it to be at least 300-500 hours.

I finally got a hold of my dealer, the one I trust that's about 60 miles away. He tells me the CC oil is a 20W50 synthetic. A good 10W40 would probably be okay in the Winter however.

Apparently there has been a problem in the past with these machines not stopping when you raise your foot off the petal because the oil was too thick. That's why CC developed the new "plus" oil which, he claims, solved that. Prices through him are $10.77 a quart and $39.51 a gallon.
