Default Bolens Hydro Fluid?

Hi,
I just purchased a new bolens. It it called a bolens eliminator. It is a model 2000. I was wondering what I should be using in the transmission. I am new to these and I have no idea what I should do since I did not get a manual with the tractor.

thanks,

Jason

welcome to the forum

parts & full service manuals are available, free download, at the below link
http://www.sonnysbolens.com/diagrams.htm

as to fluid, your hydro and rear axle use the same fluid, - eaton recommends "premium hydraulic fluid" (avaliable at NAPA), or Type "F" ATF fluid, or automotive engine oil, in that order

your trans holds 8 qts of oil - the napa oil is available by the gallon, $11/gal, or the 5 gallon bucket for $44 - those were prices here in richmond

i'll post a part number for the Napa fluid in a bit, there's also a spin oil filter, and again NAPA has em

here's the info - had this on a different computer - got the oil info either off one of the bolens parts sales website or the eaton web

You might want to double check the atf type "f" . The Bolens service manual says hydraulic oil which is 20w oil, not atf. Most eaton 11's use hydraulic oil where as the eaton 10's use type f atf.

at the bottom of the below chart taken from sonny bolens web, is the recommendation for ATF "F" - i don't know where sonny got that chart, but as it's listing oil recommendations by eaton model numbers, i assume he got it from eaton, seems most recommendations for ATF "F" are for the earlier models, but dependent on temperature environment, it appears to be recommended for most models. But given it's difficult to find, i didn't bother looking for it.

and he also has this chart on his web (link to the above image is on this linked page

http://www.sonnysbolens.com/identifythis.htm

when i spoke with LJ Hydraulics, the eaton 11 rebuild specialists that Ray Duff recommended, he simply indicated 20 wgt hydraulic oil

below is the last page in the eaton svc manual for the model 11, listing the recommended fluids

the recommendations for viscosity are in Cst - i've got some silicone oil in the shop, 200 Cst is approximate 25-30 wgt motor oil (this is a visual assessment from pouring it, not anything measured scientifically - someone might want to pull up a conversion chart on the web)

and i just looked at my 5 gal bucket of NAPA hyd fluid - label sez "Heavy Duty Tractor & Hydraulic Fluid", and lists the mfgr's specs it meets - only one i retained (my mental ram is limited) is "JD120C", but it also listed Case 7& Massey Ferguson specs. while it's not 30 wgt motor oil viscosity, from just pouring some, it looks like what i assume to be 20 wgt viscosity

someone might want to research it on the web
