Thats is even fodder for an idea!
How about a "Pac-Man" shaped, lightweight head, springloaded and mounted on a bearing for a handheld whacker? Same principle, but would take the "thinking" out of whacking so you dont "ring" your small trees.

In countries other than the US I have noticed that they make and sell more machines to take care of small details. More semi trailers have wheels on them that steer. Every trip I have taken to Europe and Australia I am fascinated with the different cars, trucks, mowers, trains and just about anything else that is mechanized.
