Yikes Earthquake near me!!!

An earthquake happened last night about 7-8 miles from my house. According to USGS it was a 1.9. We never felt it but I know some people that live right next to the epicenter. I've got to call and see if they felt anything.
Anyone else have earthquake happen close to them?
Here's link for location:

Wow, there's lot of earthquakes in the US. I didn't realize that Alaska and the Aleutian Islands were so unstable.

When the New Madrid fault (located in a line from NE Arkansas through MO, Kentucky, Tennessee, to S Illinois lets go, it will be a big one.

There have been others but they are usually small like this and don't do damage.
I just talked to a friend that lives about 1/2 mile from epicenter. There were actually 2 quakes. First at 6:42 PM and that was 2.3. Don said he heard a loud bang and thought a tree fell on the house. Went outside and nothing, so he figured maybe an accident of some sort, but he couldn't see anything since they set off road quite aways. Second one happened at 9:18 PM and that was a 1.9. His wife noticed cracks in poured concrete foundation, so they called the building inspector to check it out. Inspector gave it an OK, but Don's gonna have it checked out further.
This is the big news around here today for this sleepy little area, especially since near that area are quite a few large & expensive homes. I keep everyone informed & link to local paper when they post it.

Fact: The Indian Point nuclear power plant on the shore of the Hudson River is built directly ON the "Ramapo Fault". Go figger...

Guess our former governor isn't the only one "feeling the Earth move" these days!

sometimes they do that Lawnmowertech...we had one back in 98 or 99 when I lived in S. Cal that did that. woke everybody up but the oldest boy. Seemed like it last a long time, but probably was less than a minute. other times it's real quick, like above a loud bang and a violent shake.

Yeah, surprisingly we've had a number of them. We've had three that I remember, they occurred during work and I actually shook in my seat. We had one last week Sunday was 2.7. I was 4 miles from the Epicenter, it occurred right in Clarence Center. It woke my wife up and she said it sounded like an 8 second roll of thunder.

Yea That fault runs right through CT as well, Long Island and Cape Cod are history of it's movements. Had a small one here about 20 years ago, sounded like a frieght train coming from the west, ran right through the house and continued on east. It so seemed real that I thought it was a train.

When I lived in Vermont in the early 80's, we had a pretty good one on an early spring morning. Enough that it shook the bed as I was waking up! Had a few tremors here in Indiana over the last 20 years or so, but nothing substantial.

it was late in 98 like a rumble sound you heard it coming and all sudden it shook the home and kept going down the way

i think we are talking about the same event cause the weather man said that people heard it all the way inland as far as 300 miles

at first we thought it could of been a plane broke the sound barrier

right now we have bad weather heading our way

Well, it was a big enough event that siesmologists from Columbia Univ. came out and set up a couple of siesmographs in the area of the quake. They must have felt that there might be some aftershocks & can learn from it.

We had a 6,1 earthquake a few years ago about a 120 miles from us and it simply shook the house for a few seconds. It was more violet down in Seatle and Everett area as the Boeing plant where I work at shut down for 2 days to inspect it for safety reasons.

When it is the worlds largest building by volume they want to make sure it was safe and no real damage was noted. The Renton plant was even closer and had real damage from the temblor but was back in operation after 3 days.
