Help Craftsman LT4000

I just got this Craftsman LT4000. The 15.5 OHV Kohler currently doesn't run. The 42 inch deck is in great shape and is newer to the tractor. The previous owner told me the engine had a bad coil and wasn't getting spark. I haven't checked the spark yet because the battery was dead. The frame is also cracked by the front axle. I have a few questions. What year is it? Model number- 917.257660. Serial Number- 052594D. What is it worth running with the deck? Thanks! On to the pictures!

Yeah it's OHV. I set the valves to 5 today and it still smokes. Probably the head gasket. What kind of rear end are in the LT1000 Spicer? Or Peerless?

Why set them to the minimum on one valve and the maximum on the other, when you can set them both in the middle of their range with the SAME effort?

Do you only own a .005" feeler gauge?

Im pretty sure it is peerless. They are a fun little tractor to mod cause parts are cheap and easy to find.
