Default Murphy and My Suburban are at war...

I got the 12 running today then Murphy decided I broke his law and handed down a good buzz-kill. a few wires burned and the key won't turn the tractor off, had to pull the fuel line to stop it. Obviously I followed the wiring diagram wrong or something. I have attached some pics of the damage and the back of the ignition, hopefully someone who knows what they're doing can tell me what I didn't do right. My biggest question is how do the leads off the V/R go? I attached them according to what I thought the diagram said and they burned, so I'm thinking there's a different way of doing things.
The ignition has 4 posts, Battery, Ignition, Acc and the middle post goes to the starter according to the instructions, I hooked the starter to the starter post, thinkin maybe I needed to hook it to the ignition post instead?

So, went to replace the burned wires and opened the V/R to check it, the inside looks like oil spreayed everywhere and it smells like burned wires, guess that's shot. How hard are they to find? Can the set-up be changed to remove the V/R from the system? What's the best way to go about fixing this problem?
