There are other rare Lionel pieces going for $1000 or more but are not very common. A well known one is a pre war Lionel scale Hudson,,,, I have never seen one. Watch out when you go to an estate auction. Dummies will pay hundreds of dollars for common $40 Lionel engines and then try to make money on them,,,,, only to find how stupid they are when someone shows them the latest Greenbergs price book. They see the word Lionel and go nuts.

The auction ending price was just under $9000.00. The high price was because of an extremely rare early production variation. Regular later production versions of this engine will be worth much less.

Please don't include me in that group. None of the stuff I have is really worth a lot. I have about 80 cars with an average value of about $5.00 each. A few other cars are worth $20-$30 each. A ton of money can be spent on track and switches. The people I was talking about who spend hundreds on a $40 engine I would call uninformed opportunists. They never had any more than a circle of track setup around the christmas tree 1/2 of their growing up years until it was thrown away or given to the cousin who really was a train nut.

I worked in the model railroading biz for years, grew up around it too.. I've restored, fixed, modified etc etc, just about any pre and post war Lionel you can think of. I've dealt with a lot of Nut jobs and a lot of cool people too (just like any other industry).
Some of the guys are just so obsessed it's crazy

It was either Model Railroader or Trains magazine did a survey of their readers back in the 80s. I think there was a section titled something like: tell me about yourself. I don't remember much of the results from the survey but do remember they noted you won't find a train nut without a watch on,,, and they are into gadgets. I was just at a train show/swap meet last saturday. They tend to be an odd bunch. They are gatherers of information about trains current and past. Some of them follow specific engines which could live their lives on 10 railroads before they are finally worn out and scrapped. Many train nuts look like they never exercise. I'm slender but sure could use some exercise myself.
