Default Cheep Chick Pen

My wife wanted a couple of chicks. They only sell 6 or more. That day they were half price so I got 12. That was almost 3 weeks ago. They have been in a box near my recliner. The box had to be bigger after about 10 days.

Yesterday I started planning on a section of the dog kennel for a temporary place. We had a small section partitioned off for bottle feeding baby goats when needed. I had room to make it 7' x 11'. I put an old treated 2x6 across the top on the 11' length. Then I wired a 3" piece of old black pvc pipe on top of it. I have a good supply of 3/4" pvc in 10' lengths. I ran them over the 3" pipe and wired them down to the top of the kennel. I have an old 9' x 12' tarp I tied on top.

I put a plastic pallet 4'x4' so they can get off the ground. We used an old dishwasher upside down on the pallet so they can get inside. It has a heat lamp hanging from the heating element. I wired the door up to the kennel and put an old door on the north side for a wind break.

The big suprise is my old dog. She saw our young cat watching the chicks. Any time the cat would go near the chicks she would run it off.

The only expense was some electric fence wire holding everything together. When I build them a coop by the goat barn out back, it will be easy to take apart. I didn't manage to get in the house to get the camera. When I got some of the things done I planned today, it was too dark to take pictures. It isn't pretty but functional.

Could hear them cheeping. This is the rare time of the year of having windows open. Went out and found a piece of cardboad to block the light so they will stay closer to the light. Maybe they will settle down. I guess if they get cool they'll get inside.

All of them survived the storm last night. They found the warmest place to be. A bug doesn't have a chance around the light. The dog lays by the pen most of the day. The cat doesn't even look from far away.

The pictures aren't the greatest. I'm did remember to take a few. Had places to go and things to do.

Your setup looks good.
I kept my Cheepers up off the ground in a chest hi pen. Multiple bulbs and old feed sacks to block the wind. Cheepers like it hot n' humid, just like under Mom's Feathers.
I put some dirt on a feed sack so they could scratch. They liked that too.

I'm about 4 hours south of you. That would be an 8 hour trip. Thanks for the offer, but I think I'll build one.

That's what I get for living right in town... I miss out on all these things... The only sound chickens make around my place is "sizzle".

We had a chick tragedy this week. Our dogs were off their chains running while we were working. Looked over and they were in the pen with the new chicks. 4 of the 6 were dead. I don't think it was malicious just playing with them. Dogs got the beating of a lifetime. They wont even look at the chicks now. I was looking forward to 10 eggs a day instead of the 4 we get now. Dammit.

I've heard that you hang the dead Chicken around the Dog's neck till it rots, and the Dog wont even eat Chicken after that.
However, on our Farm, if a Dog was suspected of 'Chicken Felony' the Dog went into the Hog pen in the form of Warm Food!

When I was a teenager we tried the chicken around the dog's neck. We tried 2 and it didn't slow her down. She went to the animal shelter before the chickens had a chance to rot.
