can coil question

ok for the life of me i cant get this tractor to run been playing with the carb for a bit today, then i tokk a break and stuck my hand on the can 12 volt coil it was extremely hot couldn't keep my hand hand on it so i pulled a wire jumped it to the plug was blue say 5 min later tried the same plug this time white spark and coil still warm could coil be going out ive had one explode on this machine once went into the house looked in the mirror looked like i had survived a warner brothers cartoon

Change it out for a REAL 12v coil that doesnot need a resistor, NAPA has them for less than $20 the last time I bought one. Getting hot like that sounds like to much voltage is getting to it.

Now i believe the voltage regulator went sometime this week now that you mention it
