Default Ford LGT 165 / Complete Engine Rebuild & Restoration

Hello Fellow MTF members;

Although I am new to posting in this forum or site for that matter, I have always been somewhat of a lurker in that I have often read with enjoyment, the many articles I have come across.

A licenced mechanic by trade (although in enforcement for the past 24 years) like many of you, I have a fondness for anything with an engine and recently have fallen prey to the addiction of purchasing garden tractors.

At the moment, I have several tractors; all of which are in need of complete restoration and what better place to document the history of such restorations.

As I move through the teardown and step by step assembly of the frame, body and engine, I hope to not only contribute to your stellar site but as well, provide some helpful information along the way.

Having said that, thank you in advance for allowing me an opportunity to log this entire restoration.

The first project as indicated in the title will be the Ford LGT 165 / 16 Hp Kohler with hydraulic lift.

Please follow along in my quest for perfection.

Bad,. Glad you finally took the plunge and joined.

Great looking fleet you have there. By the looks of them, you won't have too much work ahead of you. Some start the restoration process looking much worse.

I'm sure quite a few of us will be watching in earnest as the restoration progresses along.

Happy to have you here. Looks like a nice candidate for fixing. Like the winch on the front. First time I have seen 'skinny' wheels on the front of one of these. Good luck!

And so the project begins.

Please be patient with me as the pictures will be many as I want a very detailed restoration to take place so I hope you do not mind many pictures.

Also note that the tractor being restored is not the nicer looking one as I prefer to use this one for parts.

I much rather use the older one as there have been no poor modifications done to it other than someone switching a newer motor in place of the 16hp Kohler that was original and cutting the driveline to facilitate the engine swap.

The donor tractor was purchased for $900.00 Canadian.
I know, a bit much but it was the engine I wanted and not the tractor however; the fellow would not separate the two.

The tractor being restored was purchased for $100.00

The following pictures will be of disassembly of both tractors.

Project Tractor Pictures:

Note the addition of the changed engine.

I will scrap this engine and driveline.

Project Tractor pictures continued.

Frame is a wee bit rusty but this will be completely sand blasted as will the entire tractor and engine.

Interestingly enough, when I started the engine once I was able to get the donor tractor home, the heat generated at the shroud area was so hot I could not place my hand near it let alone on it.

What ever the issue is, I am sure once I tear it down and rebuild it, I will run across the problem.

Hello K108Cub, Thank you for saying so.

Yeah not too sure what to do with that but time will tell and like you, I found that a bit odd on the tires as well although the fellow may have done so in an attempt to get more traction on the front for snow plowing as this tractor came with a plow blade. The tires seem to be a kind of snow tire I suppose.

I will be using AG on the rear when it comes time to reassemble however; not too sure up front. I will likely get suggestions from this forum not only on that but many other items as well.

I am quite a newbie when it comes to this type of vehicle as my expertise is in vintage cars from the 60s. This will be quite an undertaking for me but the cost will be no where near what I have spent in cars.
