Default How to use a Grader blade or Box blade?

Can you guys give some pointers on how to do this?

I will be doing some dirt moving (landscaping) and installing a gravel driveway. I still haven't decided on whether to buy the box blade or grader blade (Cat 0 3pt.).

How often would I need to raise/lower/adjust the 3pt height? Currently my hydro will lift and lower, but will not hold a setting for long (cylinder needs new seals). Would I need to fix the cylinder right away or could I use chains to set the min. height?

Thanks for the help guys!

cdhd2001, I would recommend the fixing of the 3pt cyl.

As far as using a box blade over a back blade it comes down to how much dirt and what shape the grounds and driveway are in. My personal is to use the box blade as it can loosen up packed ground and make leveling easier but that is just my opinion and as you will hear from others with a different view which will help you make the right decision for your intended use.

Well, I know it "sounds" like I am trying to get out of work, but truly I am just trying to priortize (sp?) my current work load (no spare time at the moment, just run, run, run....)

Any thoughts on where to find/buy the cylinder seals. My local TSC is a small one with the sales people being really limited in their knowledge.

I agree with Draddogs. You should get the cylinder repaired first. It's works best if that the blade holds its position.

I have a grader blade mounted under the center of my tractor. I find that most of the time it isn't moving a lot of dirt. With the blade angled, it just scrapes off the high spots and fills in the low spots.

I don't try to get everything perfect in just one pass. I find it's best to go over an area a few times. Keep moving over so that each pass overlaps the last one.

I've never used a box blade but I can see where they would do more than just a grader blade.

I put in my own gravel drive and go over it each spring after the ground thaws. If you roll your drive after you grade, you will find that it holds up a lot longer.

With a center mount blade I can grade and pack it with the roller at the same time. .. Ray

Hi Wally.

It is an old Farm King that I converted. I made the blade by cutting the top half off a snow blade.

There are photos in "Home Made Tractors, Implements and Accessories". It is listed under "Grader Conversion". .. Ray

Ray T, can you get the seal out? If so I would try a NAPA store if one is near you. They can cross reference it or a good hyd shop will also be able to help.

good advice--ernie......he should be able to get one from either Napa, or a good hyd. supply house---I always get 2 when I do seals, as sometimes one gets 'messed' up, and it's usually @ the worst time.....Then I label it, and keep it in one of the drawers, just happens that I can't find the right one 1/2 the time..

TSC stores have a good selection of seals also. That is where I've gotten most of my hydraulic parts for my projects. .. Ray

You are right about the selection but sometimes getting help at some locations is like pulling teeth and if you haven't ever resealed the cyl before sometimes it just saves time to give the seal to someone that will take the time to cross reference or measure the item needed. Sure has saved me a lot of time over the years.

My TSC is like that too! Except that the shelf has a sticker for it, just no product to be seen.

I know this topic is 3 years old I'd just like to add that since the last post my TSC doesn't stock their shelves either. Neither does our Northern Tool store either.

TSC here in GA either keeps the shelves stocked or never sells anything. I've never went in and came out with out what I was looking for.
