That's about a 25hp tractor. I don't know how much hp you need to run a baler but they are often coupled with a 5 foot brush hog. To my knowledge, no Satohs had down pressure on the hydraulics. I know mine doesn't but I have the smallest model Beaver. Love the 650G. To me, it's a perfect size tractor.

Hi Guys
I am new to the site and just purchased a farm for our 'retirement'. :lalala:
It only takes 15hp for a small rectangular baler. However, the PTO hp may need to be higher. I am a bit leary of this tractor's ability to pull the baler and NOT bang us and it up. I think we need more like 35-45 hp to do a proper job of baling or at least if we are going to bale a large amount.
Now, that said, I was hoping to get by with a compact tractor. Along the lines of 25-35 hp. The farm I just purchased is only 12 acres. My wife and I will be using about 5-6 acres for a CSA upick farm. The remaining 5 or so will be used for some hay. I am hoping I can take a bit of bumping/banging for this small amount, but more importantly, the tractor can take it without too much wear and tear.
Ideas? :fing20:

I am a newbie so forgive my ignorance but...
Can someone explain to me the difference between a bush hog and a belly mower (other than location)? The property came with a Satoh 650g which appears to run pretty well, with a woods belly mower, but there are some paths that are now overgrown with brush that I would like to clear, and my suspicion is that the right tool is a bush hog...

Belly mower is for mowing lawn. It has more than one blade, so tip speed is not as high. You need a bush hog.
