Let me start that this the same tractor with no reverse or first gear. Posted a month or two ago. It goes forward with no problem and I really needed to Knock down the weeds in a pasture. Don't have a bush hog so knocked down the tall stuff and took the screaming garden tractor thru it. :bonk:

Back to the cranking. The tractor ran great worked hard, first time I really did anything with it. Besides driving around the yard or something. Finished up thinking can't wait to get this tranny fixed gonna have some fun when I can back up again.

Put it away and tried to start it back up to hose it off across the driveway, cranked slow wouldn't start. Real slow. Dead battery slow. Thought odd maybe generator is bad and it ran off the battery? This evening went out fire right up cranked normal.

I am working on finding a used trans for it. Or finding one on ebay and using this for parts, just swap the loader.

Thanks for any thought on the cranking.

I would start at the beginning and verify clean battery terminals and cable clamps, good clean ground cable to frame connections, etc. Check battery fluid level, check charge of battery with hydrometer and charge if required. Verify generator/alternator output while tractor is running. That should at least get you started on the culprit. I would also check the coolant. Is the coolant at the proper fill level? Is oil in the coolant? My reason for asking is that a diesel can behave as you mentioned if it is overheating.

I will check those things on the battery. The coolant is at the proper level and proper color. Over heating crossed my mind. That would really be the end for this poor tractor. The previous owner sold it cause it blew oil out the overflow. He thought it was bad rings. I have seen no sign of anything coming out he overflow. Not even sure how he could see it from the drivers seat?

My wife isn't helping. Keeps saying go get that BX23 you know you want it!

Thanks Rory

Is the starter inordinately hot? I've known starters to suffer from the heat when the exhaust is routed too close to it.

If the previous owner said the crank case breather was blowing oil, that could indicate a blown head gasket or cracked head worst case. A blown or rusted through head gasket will not always leak coolant into the oil or vice versa. Start with the basics and work your way to the end like you are doing now. The starter could also be a culprit as Cat mentioned but be sure you have good clean, solid electrical connections throughout.

I would also recommend a load test on the battery, That can be done at most places that sell batteries. I would before you take the battery in is to charge the battery overnight on a battery charger. I just went thru the same thing on my Kubota where it would not start the tractor after running (hot restart) but if I left it for a hour and came back it started fine. Turns out the battery was a generic no-name battery made in Korea and shot, it was half the weight of the new battery I bought and the correct size and CCA for my tractor. I tested the alternator and charging system with the new battery and everything is fine and working the way it is supposed to. Just my 2 cents worth on it.

Thebattery does look like its been around awhile. Did try to see any date marks on it but didn't see any. Didn't think to check the CCA. Thanks

Hey wanna be farmer did you find anything out yet? I just want to make sure that you eliminate the obvious things first.

I haven't even got a chance to go look at it again. I have used it but haven't gotten it to that point of hard work again. Battery does say 650 CCA and from Walmart. I am contemplating just selling it. Found one near by in much better shape no loader. But I could swap it and sell this for parts or something. It may be time to cut losses. Bad trans, maybe overheating, possible cracked head with the oil coming out the overflow. :fing20: :bonk:

I'll post if anything develops with it.

Yeah sometimes it might be better to just cut your the losses and get rid of it if that is your decision. My old tractor that was left on the property was a old Massey that did not run when I bought my property, I fixed it up and got it running but never really did anything for it and I went on vacation for a week and it was stolen, I thought about filing a insurance claim but the tractor was maybe worth a few hundred dollars and I had only put in at the most 50 bucks in it and my wife was not unhappy to see that old thing disappear.:trink39:

Well if you do decide to keep it, you could have a floating short in the battery. I've had two vehicles that this problem has arisen in. Usually seemed to happen when it was warm...have no idea why but I replaced the battery both times and the problem went away.

Rory, have you had time to find the slow cranking problem? As Argee said that a battery can start to sulfate and create the problem that you are experiencing.

I found it to be the obvious problems I overlooked at the beginning. Cracked positive terminal, old battery. May have had a knee jerk reaction that it was serious with the tranny problem and mystery oil blowing too.

The dealership called today and the ROPS came in for it. I think I am getting committed to working the bugs out on this one. Guess it could be worse, could back up and not go forward! Rory

LOL Thats true. Also there is a lot to be said for known problems. You could go out and buy a "Nice shinny" one and have it be a Big smelly POS. At least now you know your problems, and can work around them.

Glad it was a easy fix.
