I am not a farmer but I have always done things to try to become as self sufficient as possible. I just bought a small spread (25 acres) with horse pastures, a small fruit tree orchard and lots of grass to cut. I bought a 1964 Massey MF65 LP gas run tractor. The tractor is in really good shape, runs like a top, and has about a half a tank of LP gas left. My question is this, what is the procedure for refilling the tank? It has two valves on the side of the motor. One is for liquid and the second is vapor. I know the less liquid you have, the more vapor you have. Is there a trick to setting these valves when you fill the tank? Thanks for any help in this matter.

Check with some local propane dealers in the area. You may have to bring the tank tp them for filling, they may charge you a premium to come out to fill one tank.

:Welcome1:

most of the farmers here that run some of the trucks on LP have a bulk tank setup to do their own refills. they buy 1000 gallons and have it in teh bulk tank, then drive up to it, hook up a liquid hose(just like the trucks use to deliver) and fill their tank on teh pickup.

unless you have a real small tank i would think taking it in would be a PITA and getting them to cmoe deliver less than 100 gallons usually costs an arm and a leg!

I am accustomed to the type tanks used on lift trucks,, they have 2 "valves" also, one for liquid in and another for vapor out. What ya do on these tanks is hook up the line from the tank to the in and turn on the pump open the vapor out and wait till ya get a white spray out the vapor, close the vapor and shut off the pump and disconnect the liquid in,, done. Now there are many safety issues to be concerned about as you can injure self and property, see your gas supplier for instruction for these safety proceedures and regulations. Basically if ya dont have a bulk tank and a pump setup well your not gonna fill it yourself.

You don't need a pump. Probably safer but you don't need it. My grandpa has 4010 JD LP and just has a hose off his bulk tank for his shop. Been filling it that way for 30 years.

They have a standard propane hook up, same as on your house tank. Early models had the small female fitting, but with the new regulations on valve design, most were converted to the combo valve with a male and female connection. Anyone I knew had a bulk tank for refueling, some were on a trailer for pulling out to the fields.

If you are not going to use it a lot you can put a nurse hose on a 250 gal tank and fill it. You need to have someone come and show you how to do it properly.

We have a welding supply truck that comes once a week to check on our supplys. He carrys different tanks labeled propane. maybe you have that service local? our guy even checks oxy/accetalene levels too. Don't change them but if he thinks we'll run out he leaves full tanks.

I think someone needs to explain if you don't have a pump, you have to bleed vapor off the tractor tank so liquid will flow into tractor tank.
